Can someone tell me more about this case. I have seen in mentioned once or twice in the past few days but can find really nothing on it after searching and it does not ring a bell. All i have seen is that him and his cousin went on a rampage. Can anyone give me the details and let me know who they killed, etc. I would assume i have seen it but it is not ringing a bell.

I do remember this case. Thanks for posting that one. The beginning does not sound familiar but the killing of the guy did. Honestly i don't care who shot that poor guy....Leon or his cousin. They both deserve to be put away for murder. They were out to cause trouble that night and that was very obvious. Jerks.

Well Douglas Porter will be home in a few years, and he was a drug dealer and the guy he shot was a customer who owed him money! Doug confessed to numerous people, 10 people who testified at the crime, but he is coming home and Lee is not ever. Forensic evidence shows Lee never handled the weapon used in the shooting and had no gunpowder on his hands.
If you are a drug dealer and shoot one of your customers who owes you money and I am with you I guess I should get a life sentence for your crime and you get a few years and are out??? |

I can tell you if you go to the St Petersburg Times online site and check archives over 40 articles about the trial, capture and escape are there and his transcripts and paper from the trial i have is huge in stacks, but it has about the people testifying his cousin killed the guy and was a drug deal gone bad. Lee never denied he was out doing wrong that night and has a PLANET of regret on his shoulder, he was 21 then and now 35, and hasn't drank since 1993 and says they were drunk that night which doesn't excuse what he did but he sure regrets it and says he never would of done those things sober.
ALso the St Petersburg Times has articles on his father. Many people do not know, while Lee was on escape his parents were raising his son who he had gotten custody of cause the birth mother almost shook him to death and spent time for this. Anyway, the grandson was molested by a family friend(his fathers old Vietnam Buddy they had known for years) and had to be taken to the hospital. Lee's father took the guy who molested his grandson out on the side of the road and shot and killed him and went to jail for it, while awaiting his trial in the county jail he hung himself. Lee was in Deleware at the time and found out about it through a phone call, but his father wrote him and the rest of the family a letter before he did it and his last request for Lee was to ask him to not drink anymore. In the summer of 2002 Lee's mother killed herself, she visited him on a Sunday, he said she was in great spirits and had a good visit, then by mid week he couldn't reach her on the phone and finally got a hold of his brother who went over and found her dead, and he found out about it on the phone with his brother that night. |

Thanks for the info Nightbird. I will look at that Times online thing. That is really sad about his parents too.
Edited to add...okay i found this articl: Albert Leon Fletcher had a compelling reason to escape custody in Dade City in January 1995 and spend more than a year on the lam. He was facing trial on a first-degree murder charge in Polk County. Fletcher, formerly of Zephyrhills, was recaptured last year and was returned to face justice. On Tuesday, a Circuit Court jury in Bartow returned its verdict: guilty as charged. The jury will return to court Thursday to decide whether to recommend the death penalty. Fletcher, now 26, was convicted in the April 1993 slaying of Nelson Medina Oliveras of Lakeland during a robbery attempt. Fletcher's cousin, Douglas Porter, 25, told police he and Fletcher shot out the tires of Oliveras' car as Oliveras was driving on a lonely two-lane road. They did not know Oliveras, said Assistant State Attorney Paul Wallace. "He (Oliveras) was in the wrong place at the wrong time," Wallace said. Fletcher and Porter were captured, but Fletcher escaped in January 1995 while being transported to the Pasco County Courthouse in Dade City to stand trial on charges of armed burglary and grand theft. Police had alleged that Fletcher committed burglaries in Pasco during a crime rampage that included Oliveras' killing. To make his escape, Fletcher picked the locks on his handcuffs and leg shackles and fled. He was recaptured in April after the television show Unsolved Mysteries showed his photo. A neighbor recognized Fletcher as the man who had moved into a mobile home park outside Smyrna, Del. He was living with a woman who didn't know his true identity. Meanwhile, Porter was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison for Oliveras' killing. His conviction was overturned, and he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted robbery in exchange for a life sentence. In Fletcher's trial this month, Porter accused him of being the triggerman in Oliveras' slaying. Fletcher also was convicted in 1994 of an armed burglary in Pasco County after a Circuit Court trial in Dade City. He was sentenced to 17 years. In July, Fletcher pleaded guilty to the January 1995 escape and was sentenced to three years. Can you explain nightbird why this article also says that the suspects did not know the victim? Like i said UM also stated this. |

If you read further the articles you can see why they really wanted to nail Lee for everything, for starters the handcuff key he got to escape he bought for 50 dollars from a guard at the jail so it caused a huge stink at the county lockup and Pascoe and Polk County were blaming eachother for the escape. And it was totally bad publicity that he ran and was not caught for so long too. He said he never said he wouldn't be captured alive and thought the police said that for dramatic effect.
SOme of the articles you will find show what he was doing on escape too. He met and was engaged to a lady in Delaware, he worked to support her and her two kids and also saw her threw several back surgeries where she was out of work. I have the letter she wrote to the judge on his behalf pleading for leniecy. None of the articles ever mention Doug being a Crystal Meth dealer or the fact that Dougs blood was on the trigger of the gun where it recoiled and cut him and how Lee didn't have that gunpowder on his hands, he sent away for all this evidence from the FDLE crime lab just recently. The judge did not allow it presented. Did I mention in any of my posts his court appointed attorney for 18 months quit right before the trial and her husband was the judge who sat the trial. Lee met his new counsel the day he was in court and they picked the jury, and the strangest thing is anytime I meet people from over where this all took place and they all of course know him cause it was big news in a little town everyone is like "Oh he got shafted his cousin did that" |

Update, The Florida Innocence Project and the Innocence Coalition are reviewing this case, due to the direct forensic evidence showing Albert Leon Fletcher had No GunPowder Residue on his hands at the time of arrest(1 hour after shooting), and the co-defendent had a fresh cut on his hand and his blood type on the gun handle, the case was eligible. The Innocence Project and Innocence Coalition only handles cases with DNA or Forensic evidence that can exonerate the defendent that was not presented at trial. FDLE had this information and it was not presented in court. There is also Newly Discovered Evidence, Depositions not presented at Fletchers trial from people Douglas Porter confessed the murder to. This evidence was supressed.
Again there was suprise that the court appointed attorney was married to the trial judge who refused to recuse himself. |

I knew that there was something shady about this entire case as I watched the segment.
Plus, he is too attractive to be sitting in prison for life. Free Albert! |
