Music in the first seasons...

I liked when they played the original music for the first seasons of Happy Days. Somewhere down the long winding road, they began playing songs of the era, but they were not the original. It annoyed the hell outta me when they did this. It just made the show seem even worse than it already was. That's why I like the original seasons before the show was taped in front of an audience. It was more realistic, genuine, authentic and fun.

i think that the music rights were killing them - they HAD to use alternate versions of the music.

I preferred the original versions of the songs, the music was still great and a very important part of the show.

we'd probably have a lot more seasons released if they had used LESS original music in the early seasons...

It was a different show the first two seasons. More of a period piece with a very dry tone. Fonzie was much cooler.

During the third season, they went to a more broad, stage-like style of acting, projecting to the people in the back. It just wasn't the same.

but i have to keep saying this the 1st and the 2nd season were not as popular as the 3rd - the 6th season these seasons were the reason the show became a hit now i love the first two seasons don't get me wrong but comercially the show was not really a sucess untill season 3.sorry but that is a fact.pearsonally i want the whole series on dvd but im not taking any bets or loosing any sleep over it because paramount sucks.

You're absolutely right. If they hadn't gone to filming live in front of a studio audience, the show would have tanked and we wouldn't have had seven great seasons of HD. Even though the first two seasons were different, it was still HD from season three on. Just a different beast. I didn't discover it until season three myself when it exploded in popularity, so the decision to film live speaks for itself.

It irks the hell outta me that shows like "Friends" get their entire seasons out on DVD and a show like "Happy Days" (which was THE top show of the seventies) is not available in FULL. I don't get it. Happy Days made history. It may have sucked later in the seasons, but nonetheless, it was historical. It made Tuesday night the night to be home watching t.v. I just don't get it.

I never liked the rock around the clock tonight opening. I only watch happy days from 75 and up

Actually, it makes sense if you look at it from a popularity standpoint: Friends just came off a ten-year run last year as one of the most popular shows on TV. Therefore, awareness is at an all-time high, so they were wise to pump out those seasons on TV at a fast rate while the show was still in first-run network airings. Will demand for Friends complete season box sets be as high twenty or thirty years from now? Hell, will DVD even be a consumer format thirty years from now???

If DVD had existed during Happy Days' 11-season run on ABC, you bet your sweet bippy they would have rushed complete season box sets out there back in the day. Friends is now in syndication and history as far as the broadcast networks are concerned, but it's still fresh in viewers' minds. Let's face it: HD is an old show.

Besides, these decisions are governed by sales and profit: If Happy Days Season One had moved enough units, Season Two would have already been released.

But I sense your frustration...and I feel your pain.

I really enjoyed the first two seasons of Happy Days, but speaking of the music, I don't recall it being original. I know there were Elvis songs played and it certainly wasn't Elvis doing the singing.

You are right. It would have cost them a fortune to license The King's music. There were a lot of soundalikes in the early seasons. Check the closing credits for a list of who the singers actually were.
