Default Freeman calls black history month ‘ridiculous’

I don't know if I should have put this in the politics board or not, but I found this interesting. Janice, I'm sorry if I misplaced this article

Oscar-winning actor says ‘black history is American history’

NEW YORK - Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is "ridiculous."

"You're going to relegate my history to a month?" the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history."

Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson's Negro History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated — when black history would become fundamental to American history.

Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."

The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism.

"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.

Freeman received Oscar nominations for his roles in 1987's "Street Smart," 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy" and 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption." He finally won earlier this year for "Million Dollar Baby."

THANK YOU!!!! Now send that message to all those whiners in New Orleans who keep crying racism. And anyone else who tries to pull the "I'm black..." card.

He's assuming we live in a society where racism is non-existent. People are going to be racist rather it's talked about or not.

actually black history is WORLD history, not just American history. black Africans have done it all, from building pyramids along the Nile and civilizing Egypt, one of the great civilizations we have grown up learning about, to enduring undeserved pain and suffering in America.

learning about Egypt IS learning about black history, and some don't seem to realize this.

That's as dumb as me saying I'm English American. Yeah...never been to England, but I guess that some ancestors way back in the 1600s were. So that means I was there, right?

Right On, Mr Freeman. Finally a respected and honorable man speaks up and tells it like it is.

i don't agree with the term African American either. why not identify with a country of origin, like Egyptian American, Tunisian American, Nigerian American, etc? white people don't call themselves European Americans.

i think if a black American is going to call themselves African American, they should have enough interest to trace their origins to a particular country, which can be done. but my black friend (who is Egyptian) and her cousin (who is that as well as Ethiopian) identify as Egyptian American, Ethiopian American, etc. rather than African.

Excellent point. There is also American Indian that is fundamental to American History. (S**T! American Indians ARE AMERICA HISTORY, THIS WAS THEIR HOMELAND). There is hispanic history that is also as significant to American history. All races, cultures, etc. play a major part in the development of American history. I remember when Black History Month was originally Black History WEEK!!!!

I absolutely agree with that. Besides, there are many blacks who are not African decendants. Some come from the West Indies and the Carribean. The famous writer and ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith comes to mind. His family is from Jamaica.
