Default Real Surprising that Mike would celebrate Christmas

I was amazed that Mike would celebrate Christmas after all his anti God talk. I guess they had him celebrate it becuase they did not know what to do with him in the episodes.

The writers could've easily written a script where he opposes Christmas and everything it stands for.

I am glad they did not do that. I know that I would not watch it.

In a sense, yes it does. If you do not believe in God, why celebrate his birthday?

Many people celebrate the commercial aspects of Christmas, family togetherness, gift giving, parties, Santa Clause, etc. There are some Christians who refuse to celebrate the holiday because of its pagan origins.

I don't recall Mike ever trashing Christmas, but he had a few run-ins with Archie about religion...one in regards to not raising Joey with religion. Archie went nuts. I think Archie took Joey to church behind Mike and Gloria's back once too.

I remember when that episode first aired in 1977, my sister pointed out that the baptism wouldn't "take hold" because it has to be done by a priest.

True, but I don't think Mike was quite the atheist he claimed to be. He wasn't religious obviously, but then again, neither was Archie.

And when Edith had her crisis of faith following Beverly La Salle's death, it was Mike who convinced her to resume her faith.

A real-life religious figure - the name escapes me now - described Mike as "God's kind of atheist."

Besides, he probably liked the gifts!

Minister Spencer Marsh wrote the book, GOD, MAN AND ARCHIE BUNKER (1976),
in which he devoted a chapter (titled "God's Kind of Atheist") to Mike Stivic.

Thank you. I now remember where I read that: It was in a book called Archie, Edith, Mike & Gloria, a book by Donna McCrohan that chronicled the tumutuous backstage behind-the-scenes story of All In The Family.

I don't know if the book's still in print, but I advise checking it out if you want a well-written account of what happened on the show.

My favorite Archie Christmas show was the one where Henry shows up dressed as Santa Clause
