Scene opens on a smiling David. He is carrying a briefcase and a heavy grocery bag. He is walking up to a 2-story house in a very nice neighborhood.
Inside we hear the laughter of children. On a couch sits a girl of 17. She is tall and has brown hair and green eyes. She has the same smirk as David, which is on her face now. On the floor are her 2 sister. Sarah is 13 and Sabrina is 9. They are playing a game on the TV and not paying attention to their dad. David walks in and peeks around the corner. “Anyone home?” he calls. He is greeted with shouts of “In here dad!” He smiles and starts putting the groceries away. In comes Brittany, his 17 year old. She starts helping him put the groceries away. “Your home early today dad, what’s up?” “I have something that I need to tell you guys and I wanted to do it tonight before you guys go to bed.” “What is it dad? Another all night case?” “Sort of, although this on is going to last a little longer this time and I am going to need to travel.” Brittany sighs and walks into the other room. She knows that her dad loves his work but sometimes she wishes he did something else. David walks into the living room. Sarah and Sabrina see him come in and pause their game. “What’s up dad?” asks Sarah. “Yeah dad, what’s up?” mimics Sabrina. “Well, I have a new client.” “So what’s so special about that? You always have new clients.” Quips Sarah. “I know, but this one is different. You see I am going to have to travel to New York. I will be gone for about a week.” All three pipe up “A week?!” “Yes a week. I called Bert and Agnes and they said that are happy to watch you while I am away.” Hearing this Brittany gets up and walks into her room. Sarah and Sabrina look at each other with questioning glances. They shrug their shoulders and look at their dad. David wonders what is wrong with his oldest daughter. He gets up and walks into her room. “Okay, so what’s up with you? Did I say something wrong?” “It’s nothing really.” “Then why do I feel like I am getting the cold shoulder?” “It’s just that I am almost 18 now dad and you are still treating me like I am 10. I can watch the girls. I have a license now and can take them to school. Plus Bert is weird.” David smiles at his daughter. He realizes that she is right. Bert is weird, and she is old enough to be trusted to help out. “How about we compromise? I’ll have Agnes check in on you at night. I will call you and get you a cell phone to use while I am gone. Does that sound fair?” “Really dad? You mean it?” “Yes, I think you are old enough to help out with looking after your sisters. Don’t let me down Pumpkin.” She smiles at her dad’s pet name for her. She never really liked it before, but for some reason it doesn’t bother her that much tonight. David walks into the kitchen and begins to cook dinner. He is thinking about a lot of things that night. Mostly he is thinking about how complicated his life has turned out. He wishes their mother could be here to help him. Especially at times like this, times when he needed someone else to talk to. Tara was someone he could always count on. She was someone special. It was at time like this that he missed her most. Early the next morning David is packing and hurrying so he can catch his plane. Brittany is up making breakfast for him. He smiles when he remembers her first attempt at it. Black toast and runny eggs, she was only 11 so it was a big deal to her. She has really become a great cook. David runs to the kitchen and sits at the table. Brittany puts a plate in front of him and he starts to eat. “This is great honey.” As he finishes up his other daughters stumble into the kitchen. “Hi dad.” They both mumble. They are definitely not morning people. They take after David in that respect. David finishes his breakfast and gets ready to head out the door. “I am out of here. Just remember that I will have my cell phone on all the time. If you need anything don’t forget to call.” “Yes dad, I know and Agnes and Bert will check up on us. I know the drill dad.” David laughs as he heads out the door. He is nervous but doesn’t let on. This is going to be a major test for him and the girls. He only hopes he can keep from going crazy with worry. David arrives at the airport and checks his bags and gets ready to board the plane. He is flying first class. He sits in his seat and closes his eyes. He doesn’t see the person who sits down next to him. It is only when he hears his name that he opens his eyes. “Well, if it isn’t David Addison.” “Maddie?” He opens his eyes and sees a face from the distant past. The years had been good to Maddie. She smiles and says “None other!” David laughs and says “So are you headed to New York on business or pleasure?” Maddie laughs and says “It is all pleasure. I am meeting my mom there and we are going shopping.” “Always the shopper, huh Maddie?” Maddie bristles at this and says “What’s wrong with that?” “Nothing is wrong with it. It just an observation, that’s all.” Maddie rolls her eyes and says “Some things never change.” “What is that supposed to mean?” “You still the same old David! Always judging people by what they used to do.” “You’re a fine one to talk. Ms. I know that David can never be responsible enough to be trusted with my heart! Well, Ms. Hayes I have made out just fine thank you!” Suddenly his cell phone rings. He picks it up and barks loudly “Hello!!” Brittany pulls the phone away from her ear and says “Jeez dad!! Yell at me next time!!” David smiles and says softly “Hey Brittany! What’s up sweetie!?” “Um, dad! I was just wondering if me, Sabrina and Sarah can go to the movies tonight?” “Just make sure you girls finish your homework!” Sabrina smiles and says “We will and the chores will be done and the house is clean.” “Okay! Then you can go! Just make sure you lock all the doors and leave a note for Agnes.” “Thanks Dad!! You’re the best!!” “So you tell me!! I love you!” “Love you too sweetie!! Have fun!!” They hang up and he leans his head back and smiles. He loved his girls. Maddie had listened to the conversation. She wasn’t sure if he was talking to a girlfriend or not. She kept quiet and they rest of the plane ride flew by. David stood up to get his carryon and bumped into Maddie. He said “Sorry Maddie!” “Well, I guess this is goodbye.” “Bye Maddie. It was nice seeing you again!” “Same here David.” “Bye.” “Bye blondie blonde!” Maddie smiled a bittersweet smile at the nickname and waved a sad goodbye. They each walked out of the airport alone. They each hailed a cab and went their separate ways…. “Whenever you remember” By Carrie Underwood is playing on the radio. When you look back on times we had I hope you smile And know that through the good and through the bad I was on your side when nobody could hold us down We claimed the brightest star And we, we came so far And no they won’t forget (Chorus) Whenever you remember times gone by Remember how we held our heads so high When all this world was there for us And we believe that we could touch the sky Whenever you remember, I’ll be there Remember how we reached that dream together Whenever you remember When you think back on all we’ve done I hope you’re proud When you look back and see how far we’ve come It was our time to shine And nobody could hold us down They thought they’d see us fall But we, we stood so tall And no we won’t forget Whenever you remember times gone by Remember how we held our heads so high When all this world was there for us And we believe that we could touch the sky Whenever you remember, I’ll be there Remember how we reached that dream together Whenever you remember Yeahhh, Ooohh We claimed the brightest star And we, we came so far And know that we showed them all And no they won’t forget Yeahhh Whenever you remember times gone by Remember how we held our heads so high When all this world was there for us And we believe that we could touch the sky Whenever you remember, I’ll be there Remember how we reached that dream together Whenever you remember Whenever you remember Ooohh, whenever you remember Not sure if I should continue....I like it so far but wanted more opinions.... |

David thought about their brief encounter all the way to his meeting. Maddie still had the ability to get to him. Even after all these years. Who would have thought that after almost 19 years she would still have the same effect on him.. He closed his eyes and remembered the last time he saw Maddie. It was right before he married Tara. They had bumped into each other at a charity function. Tara was with him and they were laughing and everyone could tell they were in love. They were dancing when he saw her. The first sight of her almost took his breath away. She was still as beautiful as the first day he met her. It had been 2 years since he saw her last. Two long and hard years. Years spent wondering if he would ever find love again. When he met Tara, he was love struck. From the minute he laid eyes on her he knew he was in love. Her beauty was quiet and unimposing. Not at all like Maddie. He asked her to marry him six months after they met. She said yes and the rest was history. He smiled as he thought about Maddie and their encounter on the plane. They still had the power to drive each other absolutely crazy. He would have to be crazy to think they could be again...
Maddie was still fuming as she pulled up to the store where she was meeting her mom. That man still drove her crazy after all these years. That much was obvious. The worst part was that she couldn't figure out why. She didn't love him. Or did she? She thought that she was over him all those years ago. When she saw him at the charity function she felt her heart beat faster. Then she saw him with his future wife and she knew then that she had lost him forever. She put on a brave smile and introduced herself to her. She wished them the best and suffered thru the rest of the night. When she got to her house she threw herself onto her bed and had a nice cry. She still can't remember why she did it. She just knew that she was crying for what could have been and what was. She realized then that some part of her would always love David. No matter how furious she got at him at times. They had always been there for each other. The cab pulled up to the store and Maddie saw her mom in front. She put on a smile as he greeted her mom "Mother!" Mrs. Hayes looked at her only child and said "Okay! What's wrong?" Maddie's smile slipped for a second. She thought to herself How can she know? Then she realized that this is her mom. She decided to be straight forward with her and she said "I sat next to David on the plane." Maddie's mom smiled and said "Oh! That's nice dear. How is he?" Maddie said "He looked good. I think he was good. He is in town on business, I think..." Mrs. Hayes smiled and said "I always liked David. You should call him and invite him to lunch with us." Maddie looked at her mom like she had grown another head. What was her mom up to. "Mother, I don't think...." "That's okay dear. I understand." She did understand. Her daughter was too head strong to call David. That is why she had called him herself. They were meeting him at 12:30 at a exclusive restaurant in the city. Of course he had no idea it was she and Maddie he would be meeting.... She just wanted her daughter to be happy..... |

Back in California Brittany was getting ready to do something that she knew would make her dad angry. She was getting ready to go into a modeling agency and see if she had what it took. She had talked to her dad before. A agent had come to her school earlier in the year and she had talked to her dad about it. The agent thought that she had what it takes to make it. Her dad told her that she couldn't do it and that she needed to stay in school and get an education. She had no idea why he was so set against it. She pushed to door open and walked inside. She took a deep breath and walked over to the receptionist. She smiled at the woman at the desk and said "I am here to see Maddie Hayes!"
The receptionist said "I'm sorry, Ms. Hayes is out of town. Can I make an appointment for you to come back when she is available?" Brittay smiled and said "Sure! My name is Brittany Addison." "Okay Brittany! She will be back in a week. I have you down for an appointment with her! See you then!" "Okay! Bye!" Meanwhile, back in New York David arrived for the meeting with his client. He smiled as he reached for the door to the ritzy restaurant. He loved places like this. They always had good food. He walked to the hostess and said "I am David Addison..." She smiled and said "Yes, we are expecting you Mr. Addison. Right this way please!" David smiled and followed her. His smile faded as he saw the table that he led her to. Seated at the table was Maddie and her mom. He looked at the hostess and smiled as he said "I believe there is some mistake. I am here to meet..." Mrs. Hayes spoke up at this point and said "There is no mistake David! I am the client." Maddie and David both looked at each other and said "You?!" She smiled and said "Yes.." "Mother, I don't understand..." "That's okay Maddie!" Maddie stared daggers at David and said "Be quiet you!" Mrs. Hayes smiled at their fighting and said "I needed an excuse to get you two together again. This just seemed like the perfect opportunity. I think I will leave the tow of you together. I'm going to check out the kitchen." David looked at her as she left and finally asked Maddie "The kitchen? They will let her in the kitchen?" Maddie rolled her eyes and said "She is part owner of the place. She and Daddy bought it several years ago. David, I'm sorry, I had no idea that she would..." David held up his hand and said "No apologies necessary. I seem to remember that you mom always had a stubborn streak about her. Sort of like her daughter." Maddie laughed and decided that he was right. She was alot like her mom. She was never willing to give up. At least in some ways. She still had alot of regrets in some areas of her life..... David and Maddie sat staring at each other as the night faded away....They ate dinner in silence and talked a bit... |

After dinner they had coffee. David asked "So Mrs. Hayes, what can I do for you?"
Mrs. Hayes smiled and said "David, do you mind if we take a walk?" David looked at Maddie and she smiled and said "Go ahead." She wasn't happy about it, but knew that her mom would do it anyway. She sat back and watched her mom walk away with David. She decided to check her messages at work. She called the agency and Maria answered the phone. She smiled as she said "Hi Maria!!" "Ms. Hayes!! Are you okay?" "I'm fine Maria, just fine. I was just calling to see if I had any messages." Maria smiled and thought that this was so like her boss. Always concerned about her business even though she was clear across the country. Maria said "No messages, but I have a potential client lined up." Maddie smiled and said "Good, I should be back on Monday. Possibly sooner." "I thought you were visiting your mom?" "I am, but mom is meeting with someone from my past." "Oh!?" Maddie smiled and said "Remember I told you that I owned a detective agency at one time?" "Yes..." "Well, it seems that my mom decided that she needed his help with something." "Oh!" Maddie smiled and said goodbye. Meanwhile David and Mrs. Hayes were talking outside. It was a fairly cool evening so they walked to stand by a fountain. Ginny Hayes smiled as she talked to David. She had always liked him. He was good for her daughter. Too bad she was too stubborn to see it. Mrs. Hayes said "So, how has life been treating you David?" David smiled. He had always like Maddie's mom. He decided to be honest with her. He smiled as he said "It's been good. I married. I have three daughters. Then there are the bad times..." David had a far away look in his eyes. Mrs. Hayes asked "What David?" David smiled as he said "Well, I lost my wife quite a few years back. She was one of a kind." Mrs. Hayes smiled and said "David, I am going to ask you an honest question. Do you still care for Maddie?" David sat back to think. When he finally answered he spoke truthfully. "Yes, I will always love her!" |

David and Mrs. Hayes were talking and Maddie came back to the table. She smiled at David and her mom. The night went on peacefully. David and Maddie were dispassionate towards each other. They kept each other at a distance.
Finally Mrs. Hayes told David what she needed him for. "Well, it seems like I have a thief in my restaurant. He has been stealing a great amount of money over the past few months. I needed someone I could trust. I could think of no one other than you." David smiled and said "I'm flattered Mrs. Hayes, but surely there are good detectives in New York that you...." "David, I wanted someone that I trusted. That someone is you. Can you help me or not?" David thought for a moment. Finally he nodded and said "Yes, Mrs. Hayes I would be delighted to help you." She smiled and said "Thank you David. Well, I must be getting home. I am exhausted." With that Maddie's mom got up from the table and left David and Maddie sitting together. David says "Care to dance?" Maddie smiled and stood up. They were dancing when one song ended and the next began. The next song was "Let me let go" by Faith Hill. I thought it was over, baby We said our goodbyes But I can't go a day without your face Goin' through my mind In fact, not a single minute Passes without you in it Your voice, your touch, memories of your love Are with me all of the time Let me let go, baby Let me let go If this is for the best Why are you still in my heart Are you still in my soul Let me let go I talked to you the other day Looks like you make your escape You put us behind, no matter how I try I can't do the same Let me let go, baby Let me let go It just isn't right I've been two thousand miles Down a dead-end road Let me let go, darlin', won't you I just gotta know, yeah If this is for the best Why are you still in my heart Are you still in my soul Let me let go The lights of this strange city are shinin' But they don't hold no fascination for me I try to find the bright side, baby But everywhere I look Everywhere I turn You're all I see Let me, let me let go, baby, won't you Let me let go It just isn't right I've been two thousand miles Down a dead-end road Oh, let me let go, darlin', won't you I just gotta know If this is for the best Why are you still in my heart Yeah, you're still in my soul, let me let go Let me let go, let me let go Maddie ran out of the restaurant at the end of the song. The lyrics were just to painful. They reminded her of everything they had together. Everything they could have had together. She thought that she had put her feelings for David behind her. She was surprised to find that they were just as vivid and sharp as that day so many years ago when she walked into his office.... |

Maddie called her mom the next day! She had to go back. She had a business to run and being around David brought back too many memories. Her mom could handle this herself. She smiled and dialed her mom's number.
"Hayes residence!" "Mom, it's Maddie!" "Maddie! Where did you go last night? I came out of the kitchen and you were gone. Did you have a fight with David?" Maddie smiled and said "No mom! I was just feeling tired and..." "Maddie, I have been your mom for a long time and I know you better than that. Besides, David told me the same thing. That you were tired." Maddie smiled and thought about David. He was always there for her in the past. She had missed him alot over the years. Whenever something important happened to her she had wanted to pick up the phone and call him. Then she remembered that he had a life of his own. A life that didn't include her anymore. "Mom, I am flying back to LA today!! I have to get back to the office. Maria called and I have a full schedule for tomorrow. It can't be helped Mother..." Maddie's mom smiled and said "Have a nice flight dear!" That was it. No trying to talk her into staying, no questions why. Just "Have a nice flight dear." She wasn't sure whether to feel insulted or happy. She smiled and said goodbye to her mom. The drive to the airport was a long one. The radio played the song "I remember LA" The song brought back many memeories. I remember L.A. Seems a lifetime ago We were stars on Sunset Boulevard What a movie we made There were days in the sun That have stayed forever young Nights when passion was invincible We thought love would never die (Chorus) There were moments in that lifetime That my heart still replays There were minutes, there were hours, there were days There are moments I still love you that same way When I remember L.A. I remember goodbye I watched your plane out of sight Love was over, time to close the book Still I go back for one last look How true that song was! There were so many moments from her life back then that her heart held dear! Every case was seared into her memory. Every fight they had. How she wished that her life had turned out different. She regrets never having children. She just couldn't bear to get pregnant again after loosing the first baby. She was afraid to try again. Then it was too late. She she simply resigned herself to never having children. She smiled as the plane lifted off and headed for her home on the west coast.... |
