We have discussed this topic numerous times and no one seems to know why. I am afraid that "Gert" has become a lost episode!

Okay, I was browsing at another board and there was a post from a member there...posted almost three weeks ago. He said he called TBS to ask about GRA. It seems that the master tape for GRA was accidentally destroyed.

Actually that may be the case, but that is not the reason they don't show it.
I saw an explanation on a MF site some time ago. I'll try to re-tell it.

In the episode Imagene Coca (sp?) is in the hospital. At some point during the episode, a nurse enters the room. Whether she actually had lines or not, I don't remember. However, she had more of a role than the typical "extra".
This actress did not get paid for her work. She eventually took the production team of MF to court and the court ruled in her favor. In the end, she won the rights to the episode. Therefore, it cannot be shown without her permission.

I would hope that if the DVD comes out that Warner Brothers would compensate this woman and get the episode on the set. But we'll see!

And I wonder what they'll do once they start releasing the DVD's. Will they use an existing rough copy and try to remaster it, label it as a lost episode, or nix it from the episode list completely for that season?

Some heads up for all Mama's Family fans. NBC still has the master tapes for the first two seasons along with other production materials such as bloopers, etc. When the DVD's start coming out they will be (at least the first two seasons), the unedited NBC versions (and not the edited syndication versions). "Gert Rides Again" is being included, as NBC still has the original master tapes of the show. Even though the show was sold for syndication purposes they still hold these master tapes. The first season DVD should include all original, unedited episodes as well as a blooper reel and (if we are very lucky), the original "Eunice" movie (which is still being discussed as to whether it will be included or not). Good things are coming! Warner is going to make many fans very, very happy.
