The National Education Association wanted a "technical adviser" on WELCOME
BACK, KOTTER's set to "protect the image of school teachers." Gabe Kaplan's answer: "Would you believe a technical adviser on the set of SANFORD & SON to protect the image of junk dealers?" The character MISTER ED originated in a series of magazine stories in which the horse not only talked, but got drunk. The palomino ("Bamboo Harvester") was born in 1946 and died Feb. 28, 1979. He was 33 years old. They made the horse look like he was talking by putting a piece of nylon mesh under his top lip. He was really trying to dislodge it. Allan "Rocky" Lane, the man who supplied Mr. Ed's voice, was a 1930s cowboy movie star. PETTICOAT JUNCTION's Hooterville Cannonball was a plastic shell that was originally built for an early Marilyn Monroe film called "Ticket to Tomahawk." It was modeled after a real train in Sonora, California. There was only one set of wheels for the Cannonball, which were moved from locomotive, to baggage car, to passenger car as scenes required. ... Bea Benadaret was Lucille Ball's first choice to play Ethel Mertz. To pick Kate's daughters, producer Paul Henning interviewed 1500 women. Kathy Nolan (THE REAL McCOYS) played Wendy in the Broadway and TV musical "Peter Pan" (starring Mary Martin). ... BEWITCHED was originally conceived by William Dozier, creator and executive producer of BATMAN, while he was a V.P. at Screen Gems. When shooting began, star Elizabeth Montgomery was 8 months pregnant. Producer (and husband) William Asher had to shoot the first five shows without her, adding in her scenes later.
