Sad Led Zeppelin: 25 Years Gone

On December 4, 1980 (a quarter of a century as of tomorrow) Led Zeppelin decided to call it a day after over a decade of rock dominance. Following the death of drummer John Bonham on September 25th, singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones and manager Peter Grant decided that with out their dear friend that they could not carry on as a band. This statement was given to the press:

"We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect that we have for his family, together with the sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide we could not continue as we were."

And with this the greatest hard rock band, and the second greatest music act period (second to the Beatles) were no more.

Sad

I was just listening to Lunch With Led here on Seattle's KZOK 102.5 FM, but they need to expand that show by another hour or two.

What's worse than that Zeppelin has been gone for quarter decade now is that there are a bunch of mall-ternative kids out there who understand ZERO about how cool Pagey, Bobby, Bonzo and Jonesy were (and are). NO ONE could play it the way those guys could.

Would you believe that throughout the autumn of 1980, rumored repalcements for John Bonham included Cozy Powell (late of Blackmore's Rainbow) and. . . PETER *##@!!in' CRISS???????

I was a senior in highschool when they disbanded after Bonhams death. It was a sad year for rock and rollers like me. I believe Peter Grant died and he died broke. Can anyone confirm that?

That was a bad year: First Bonham and then Lennon. Dark days indeed. I thought back then that 33 (Bonham's age) was old, but now that I've outlived Bonham by a few years, I realize...it isn't.

Peter Grant died of a heart attack in 1995 at the age of 60. I don't know what his financial situation was though.

Here's a humorous anecdote about Peter Grant. . . . He introduced himself to Bob Dylan at a party and said, "I manage Led Zeppelin," and Dylan replied, "Hey, I don't come to you with my problems, do I?"
