Question 80's??

I watched this show a few times a couple of years ago (I believe it was the shows first season). I noticed that it said at the beginning of each episode, the date and the year, it was 1977 I believe. Anyway this show should be entering the 1980's, and if it is will they be changing the title?

I dont think they expected a long run, if they did they probably would have set it in the early 70's.

If I remember right, they stopped the practice of flashing the date at the beginning of the episode at the beginning of Season 2. Probably for the reason you cited -- if they continued to do it, they would have been "pushed" into 1979 by this season. As it stands now, the current episodes can be said to be taking place any time after the mid-1977 timeframe.

I kinda chuckled at the "Dungeons and Dragons" reference in last weeks episode (Donna's Radio Daze). Thought they were getting a bit ahead of themselves there -- I don't remember D&D becoming a real fad until about 1981 or so . . .

I believe the show did begin in 1976, but it quickly moved into 1977, because they did a Star Wars episode.
Now I believe they've been stuck in 1978 for a few seasons.
Also, the gang hasn't come any closer to graduation either.
I guess they're sticking to some of the old 60's/70's sitcom conventions - the kids never age, the year stays the same, etc.
I don't care, it still one of my favorites.

The date is flashed on the license plate of the car right? I might be mistaken, but the last time I saw it, it said 78, I think..

Now that The 80's show has been cancelled, maybe they can go on into the 80's themselves? Heh, I doubt it though.

What I thought was stupid was that Fox made an 80's show that focused on people out of high school.
(by the way, that show was crap)

If That '70s Show ever went into the 80's, that is where these characters would be. Did they not have the foresight to see that this show could possibly be on for 7 years ?

So now they can't change the name and I don't see how they can make it into the 80's.

I think they will drag out 1979 for as long as possible as a backdrop.

You may have something there. After all, the show is a period piece, so they can fudge around with the dates without it having an adverse effect on the basic situation (unless, of course, some of the actors age themselves right out of character.)

But one thing I must say about this show: it IS historically accurate...proper clothing and hairstyles and lingo...I remember all this stuff from the '70's myself. Usually in programs of this type, they stop trying to evoke the period after awhile ("Happy Days", anyone? And you never got the feeling that M*A*S*H really took place in the fifties, either.)

i dont think that 70s show will ever go to the 80s..they can drag out from 76-78 in 4 years i think they can drag it out for another few seasons...you dont really know what the exact date is in the epi's so i dont think they'll ever go into the 80s

Even if they do, I don't think it will matter. That '80s Show failed because it wasn't very funny and the cast had no chemistry, not cause it happened to take place in the '80s. Plus, you gotta remember that decades don't begin to feel like anything different until they reach their second year. For instance, lots of people were hoping for major change in 2000, but as I remember it, it was one of the stalest years ever. The winds didn't really shift until 2002. Does that make any sense to anyone, or am I rambling?

I read in an article somewhere that the last season was gonna take place in 1981.

Hey, as long as the "kids" don't look like they've aged(Which they don't) I don't mind that they're frozen in a particular year.
