35 Years of Family's 'Anyway'
Thiirty-five years ago this month, Family released Anyway, their fourth album and their first and only album to feature live material.
![]() Side one of Anyway featured intense, thunderous concert performances from the band, from Charlie Whitney's explosive guitar chords on "Good News Bad News" and John Weider's violin solo on "Willow Tree" to their dueling guitars on "Holding The Compass" and Poli Palmer's vibes on the Family theme song "Strange Band" - complemented by rooger Chapman's peircing, bleating vocals throughout. Side two featured fine studio performances of the song "Part Of the Load," about tourng America, with a funky Weider bass line and Rob Townsend's shuffling drums, the boobam percussion (commonly used on movie scores) in the title song. Also included was the violin-laden instrumental "Normans" and the anitwarfolk-rock tune "Lives and Ladies," with another masterful Townsend drum performance. "Strange looking band were we. . . ."

Also included on CD reissues of Anyway is Family's April 1970 single "Today," a haunting ballad that sounds like George Harrison's most plaintive songs.

Side one of Anyway was recorded in June or July 1970 at Fairfield Halls in the Croydon section of London. Side two ewas recorded at Family's favorite London studio, Olympic (also a favorite of the Rolling Stones).
