this has nothing to do with dvd trading, this is just the first place i thought to ask. i purchased one of the new xbox's that came out today. i am putting it on ebay, though i am scared to accept paypal because of some of the stories i have heard people tell on here where people get there item and then report to paypal that they have been scammed. if i accept paypal, is there any sure way to stop this from happening.

Only ship to confirmed addresses and make sure you get delivery confirmation. That way you are covered under paypal's seller protection.

first, if it is over $250 Pay pal requires you to send it with a SIGNATURE required, they dont tell u that in an easy to understand way, BUT I HAVE BEEN RIPPED off b/c i didnt do it, if it is over $250 MAKE THEM SIGN FOR IT
also you can still get ripped off with pay pal go to www.paypalwarning.com and read some horror stories pay pal is still a good bet, BUT if someone wants to rip u off, they can they can claim the merchandise wasnt correct and file a dispute with their credit card company and other tricks most buyers are honest, BUT there are some real bums out there

aol users cannot access that paypalwarning.com site
it has a SECURITY RESTRICTION that says its a possible fishing/scam site BUT ALL IT DOES is post info on how people have been ripped off at paypal and also about how some pay pal users have actually SUED pay pal for damages and WON! |

The thing is that if you don't accept PayPal, you're likely not to receive as many bids which, in turn, could lead to a lower final price. Many people don't like the hassle of getting a money order or sending a check, so, if they can find the same thing elsewhere where PayPal is accepted, they'll likely go there.

Also, as a previous ebay seller, I would recommend checking the high bidders feedback before the end of the auction. If they don't have any feedback but they are going to spend $600 on an xbox...Putting a warning in your auction will help, like no negative feedback or something. I would definitely spend the extra cash to get the package insured, signature confirmation etc.

im the same way as loren
i ONLY pay pal for an item, UNLESS i know the person b/c even with all of pay pals flaws it is still safer than mailing a money order |

I agree with what others have said regarding accepting Paypal...
You will get less bids/lower price if you don't accept it. Ship only to a PAYPAL CONFIRMED address. (NOT the address tied to their EBAY account - although they may be the same.) Get delivery confirmation THAT CAN BE VERIFIED ONLINE. (If it can't be verified online, you may as well not have it.) INSURE the item. Period. Do not make it optional. Include the small fee in the s/h charge. If it sells for over $250, require a signature for delivery. BTW, while I much prefer paying with Paypal (due to ease & the fact that I can pay within minutes of EOA), I do occasionally buy from sellers who do not accept it...BUT ONLY IF THEIR FEEDBACK (as a seller) IS EXCEPTIONAL. If FB for selling is marginal & they accept PP, fine. But if FB is marginal and they only accept checks or money orders...there's a reason for it - they know if they don't follow thru, PP (or the credit card used) will do a chargeback to the buyer and/or freeze the seller's account - can't do this with checks or money orders. I got burned on this once but never again. ![]() PS - Ebay has message boards that are very helpful. Go to COMMUNITY (at top), Discussion boards. There are sections on bidding, feedback, packing & shipping, Paypal, etc. And don't be put off by all the people giving advice with little or no feedback. Most people use 'posting ids' because if someone doesn't like the advice given, it's not uncommon for them to interfere with that seller's auctions. Most of the regular posters there have selling ids with feedback in the hundreds & many in the thousands. Oh, one more thing. Many people will not bid unless the shipping/handling is clearly stated in the auction or they have a quote from the seller to their zip code. I always estimate how much it will cost by putting the item in the box with lots of packing material & weigh it. THen I state a flat rate in the auction. Sometimes the actual shipping is higher (but not by much) & sometimes lower - it all kind of works out in the long run. I don't use the shipping calculator because I don't want someone telling me it shows them $X when it shows me $Y. Just one less potential hassle. |

rewhine makes a good point
feedback doesnt tell the entire story many people have feedback as a buyer, and little or none as a seller feedback is simple to get as a buyer just buy coupon codes and recipes for a $ 1 or less and rack up 50 in one one night without a problem the web is full of thieves get all the info you can, and protct yourself |
