These two wonderful actors are my all time favorite out of the gang from TAXI. I love Carol Kane and Andy Kaufman. I am so sorry Andy Kaufman died from Lung Cancer. Did Andy Kaufman smoke? What I understood he didn't -- but, when he portray Tony Clifton he did smoke. Was that a real cigeratte.

I'm almost positive that he was a hard-core smoker. I would always see him with a cigarette in his hand.

Supposedly, Andy drank, smoked and did drugs in his teens, though gave it up when he began practising Transcendental Meditation by his early twenties. With the exception of a chocolate fixation, he ate and lived healthy the rest of his life. When he played Tony however he smoked, ate red meat, and did things that were the opposite of his character. Tony allowed Andy to explore the dark side of his nature. In the film "Man on the Moon", to show how different Tony was from Andy, the producers were even thinking of making a scene where Andy went to the doctor and was told he had lung cancer, yet when he went as Tony Clifton the next day, the doctor would examine him and tell him that he was totally fine.

it could have been real it might not have. my friend when he was a kid was in a TV show, and had to do a smoking scene, i asked him, did you really smoke in that scene, he said it was this one kind of material that made it look like real cigarettes but wasnt, maybe Andy Kaufman used the same thing....

Andy Kaufman did not smoke, but he got cancer because of all the smoke filled bars and clubs me performed in.

Yeah, I didn't think he smoked, either. It said so on Man On The Moon. Danny DeVito's character said "But, Andy, you don't even smoke!" when Andy told him.
