Default HP = Crap

Never...Ever will I ever buy anything that has to do with HP again.

About a year ago my parents got me a brand new laptop from Rent-A-Center as a Christmas Present and it was great. Had a nice processor and graphics, and a good amount of RAM. I loved it. I almost completely filled the 35GB Drive...I had a bunch of games (one of which had about 100 different maps/levels i had to download seperately) family photographs, and music....Tons of stuff I probably wouldnt ever be able to replace on it.

Well anyways...I better get to the point. About a week ago I noticed that the volume buttons on the front of the laptop werent working, and the headphone jack didnt make a good connection to headphones anymore. This, of course, was just due to normal use and wear on it. Other than that the computer was exactly like brand new. As if it was never used. Another problem was that the AC adapter was shorting out recently, because it was used for hours and hours every day.

It was/is still under warranty, so we brought it back to the Rent-To-Own place (RentACenter) and they made sure to send it out to HP for repairs on the worn out parts about a week ago.

So today, they get it back in the store and when we get it back, absolutely NONE of the problems were fixed, the computer looked like it had been sandpapered, and the drive was wiped CLEAN. Everything I had on there was lost. Words cannot describe how furious I was. My Mom spent over 1,500 bucks on that piece of crap and everything me, my brother, and my sister had put on there over the past year was gone. I know the junk didnt really matter much, but it's frustrating to lose all of that stuff that wasnt even supposed to go anywhere. It just shouldnt have happened....Especially not on a $2,500 machine. The thing was in PERFECT shape other than the normal wear from extended use, and it came back to me looking like some 5 year old had been throwing it around.

My Mom personally knows people there, and has been a customer there for about 15 years....So I am 99.9% sure NOBODY there had anyone to do with this. It was HP's fault...Because it was specifically LISTED to just fix the volume buttons, the headphone jack, and replace the AC Adapter. HP just wiped the drive, banged it around, and figured we wouldnt notice, I guess.

I guess the good thing out of it all is that after my Mom threw a FIT...Rent-A-Center gave us a brand new Dell Desktop with a 2.66GHz Processor with 512MB of RAM and a 80 gig drive for however much money we still owed on the Laptop LOL

So anyways...Yeah. I felt the need to rant. Thank you for your time.

Sucks!! I know what its like to lose everything you have saved . You should really call HP and let them know about the 'service' you got and maybe theyd replace it with a new one. Couldnt hurt.

Anyways, I heard HP was kinda -_____- when I was asking around about digital cameras. They kept falling apart. Though nothing was wrong with your computer, but you didnt get good service.

Yeah, my brother got a HP digital camera for Christmas in, I think, 2002 and that thing was a piece of ****! It worked at first and then it started taking really screwed up pictures. For example, if he took a pic of somebody sitting on a chair, their head would get cut off and moved to the bottom. It was like that with the body parts...they would get randomly arranged all over the picture and the colors would get inverted.

I have a HP PSC and even so, that thing is a piece of ****. My next one will probably be an Epson.

I don't really care for HP, either.

anytime you are sending your computer away, or taking it somewhere and leaving it with someone else ALWAYS make sure that you have everything backed up FIRST - if you can't afford to lose what's on there don't hand it over.

AC adapter jacks are usually a non-replaceable component on the motherboard; that usually means that they have to REPLACE the motherboard, and if they have to do that, then they HAVE to reinstall the operating system (basically reimage the machine), which means that you will DEFINATELY lose everything on there.

Sorry man

Actually, I dunno why I said the AC Adapter jack....I really meant the cord that comes with the computer. You're right though, I shouldve backed it up. I learned my lesson.

Seriously, I would totally file a complaint against HP. Getting your machine back in that condition is inexcusable. Someone at HP needs to pay.

I had 2 HP printers once and they both sucked butt. They got dirty and would streak. I cleaned them...and it still did it. I went and bought a $30 Lexmark and despite the fact that I tripped over the cord and yanked it off my desk and it fell to the ground and broke, IT STILL WORKS. The HP should have been thrown.

I think you rent them and when you pay them off, you own it. Kind of like lay-a-way, but you get to take it home.

I think.

... why don't you complain? i mean, yea the hard drive getting wiped.. that's something that they can probably say "well, you should have backed it up", but getting it scratched up? i'd complain to someone at the rent-a-center and have them do something about it.
