Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington (Lawrence Hilton Jacobs) for the longest time I thought it was him who sang the theme. It wasn't until I heard the song on the radio the first time ( I was eleven) that I heard the singer's name. The guy who sang it is the same guy who wrote it. A goofy looking white guy with glasses. I couldn't believe it. I wonder if any of you thought the same thing.

John Sebastian was also the lead singer of a very popular '60s group named
the Lovin' Spoonful. Does anyone out there remember them? They had a string of hits, incl. "Summer in the City," "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?," "Do You Believe in Magic," and "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice." Both "Summer in the City" and "Welcome Back" went all the way to Number One on Billboard's Top 40. |

I rememerber John Sebastian, even when he was with The Lovin' Spoonful. I saw him at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis back in the 80s. He opened for Robin Williams and yes, he did sing the theme from Welcome Back, Kotter.
