I don't know how to say this, but where were you when you first heard a song
and the song reminds you of a particular moment or day? For me, it was these: Johnny Mathis's version of "A Christmas Song": in March 1971, an uncle of mine who was a coal miner in Bergholtz, Ohio, which is not far from Steubenville, Ohio, died, and I felt sorry for my Aumt Lena, who was his wife. That Christmas I first heard the song, and...I didn't really have to worry. She moved in with her family in Steubenville and died when she was 103. Neil Young's "Heart of Gold": When I was growing up my cousins had a trailer in Marblehead, Ohio that they vacationed at. My family spent Memorial Day weekend, 1972 there, and that Sunday, me my brother, and our cousins played miniature golf at a place that was about a mile west of there on Ohio 163. It got up to 90 degrees that day, but it wasn't humid. My brother and I got terribly sunburned that day. John Lennon's "(Just Like) Starting Over": I forgot when it was released exactly, but 1)my dad died died the morning after Thanksgiving 1980, and 2)John was assasinated on Dec. 8, 1980.

"Superstar" by the Carpenters reminds me of my sister, when she was a year old, wanting to hear the song over again because the Carpenters sang "Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby" - and she thought they were singing to her!

I don't really get out a lot. When I do go out, I couldn't be happier. I love being in a nice milieu. I'm as happy as a clam. Just as long as I'm not in some club playing hip-hop. You hear that sort of thing in a lot of places. That's not my milieu. Rock and roll is good-time music. I love rock. So did my parents. |
