Does anyone remember the segment about a California cop who claimed that some men tried to kill him? The segment was originally shown in November 1989, but it was never rerun on Lifetime.

While I can't recall the name of the cop in question, I do remember a few things about the segment: In 1988, two men allegedly entered the cops home and overpowered him; they put a pillow next to his head, and one of them fired a gun at the cop, who turned his head just enough to avoid a potentially fatal shot. Although he was confronted by two men, he claimed that he heard a third man somewhere in his house. The segment showed composite drawings of the men who allegedly tried to kill him.

Yes I remember that one. His name was Doyle Wheeler and I believe he was a former San Diego police officer. Some seemed to incinuate that he could have staged the entire event and was the type to crave attention. He said when they shot him he jerked his head to the side just enough to avoid a fatal injury. He also claimed they made him write a suicide note. There was a fellow police officer who had worked with Wheeler in the past named Donovan Jacobs. Jacobs was accused of police brutality and Wheeler testified against him (as did other officers) that he was a racist. The trial did not fall in Jacobs favor and Wheeler seemed to think this could be a motive for his attack. Also Wheeler claims one of his attackers went to the next room during the attack and made a phone call. Police records indicate that a call was made from Wheeler's house around the time of the attack to the police department in the same department where Donovan Jacobs worked. They was even a routine recording made of the call and police officials were pretty certain it wasn't Wheeler's voice lending credence to his story of attackers in his house. Neighbors did report seeing strange people and vehicles around the time of the attack. There was no mention of any arrests in the case. I'm curious as to why Lifetime never showed it and wondered if it could have been at the request of the SDPD as it doesn't really show some of their former officers in a favorable light. They used a lot of news footage from the Mcdonalds (?) shootings in this episode. I wonder if some kind of legal hangup over the rights to this footage prevented Lifetime from airing the episode.

Wow, I didn't notice that Justin. I'll have to be more observant next time I watch it. This is a pretty controversial segment with a retired officer accusing other officers of attempting to have him killed maybe Lifetime just didn't want to caught up in it. I wonder if there have been any developments in this case.

Hey maybe Lifetime didn't air it because there were no females involved in it.

That is one of the things I remember about the segment. I knew that Doyle Wheeler was among the police officers who arrived at the scene of the McDonald's restaurant massacre in 1984. While I have some doubts as to whether that news footage could have been a factor in the segment not being rerun on Lifetime, I do know that the McDonald's restaurant where the carnage took place was later torn down.
