Sad It's Been 40 Years Since New York City Went Dark

Do you know what happened 40 years ago, today? The great northeast blackout in which the entire New York City area as well as other parts of surrounding areas had lost power. That was 1965. That was long before my time. Has anybody remembered when that happened?

Well, I was born one day before that, but I didn't learn about it until I was around 9.5 years old(thanks for the birthday notice yesterday everyone, BTW), but from what I've been told, when the hospital my mother and I were staying in finally got their power back, it was the first time I opened my eyes. I don't know if that's considered normal or not.

There was a big baby boom in New York nine months after the blackout.

There was(1977), but it was pretty much confined to New York City. The big one was in 1965.

That is what Drinka is talking about in Cheetah Girls miovie. After the power goes out in New York(in 2003 in the movie) she says, "This reminds me of the big blackout in Manhattan of 1977. The power(in 2003, in the movie) comes back on in a less than a minute though.

Of course I remembered it. That was the black out that was on all night. It was scary too.

There was no looting and that was my first blackout ever. I remember reading about the people stuck in the train tunnels and the elevators. I remember my parents put only one candle and I remember distincly that I was eating dinner at the time the black out struck. It was so scary. We lived in a high floor at the time and when you looked out the window it was total darkness.

I was four days old and still in the incubator at St. Vincent's Hospital in Montclair, New Jersey (now an abandoned hulk!), as I was a preemie. (I was sixteen days early.) Fortunately, St Vincent's had a backup generator.

You hear that sort of thing in a lot of places. That's not my milieu. Rock and roll is good-time music. I love rock. So did my parents.
