Ray Romano plays Mitch Stasiak, a happily married 44-year-old dad of three who works as meat department manager at the local grocery store. Mitch's beloved wife, Cheryl Stasiak (Faith Ford) works at a floral shop, which is owned by her sister-in-law: Julie Stasiak (Laurie Metcalf). Julie is considered a member of her slightly-younger brother's family-after never marrying and never having any children of her own. Mitch and Cheryl's three children are the 19-year-old Alyson Stasiak (Margo Harshman), the 17-year-old Meghan Stasiak (Alexa Vega), and the 16-year-old Chris Stasiak (Jake Thomas). Chris is a high school sophomore and Meghan is a high school junior. Alyson is a recent high school graduate, who has reluctantly enrolled in a local community college (as she remains living at home). Alyson's big dreams of going to an Ivy-League college out-east were put on hold, after realizing neither Alyson nor her parents could afford the tuition-which upsetted her greatly. While attending community college, Alyson is soon befriended by a classmate of hers, Danny Peserik (Bug Hall)-who is truly everything Alyson needs in life. Danny comes from a broken home (his mom is a stripper, his dad is in jail, etc.) yet his family life doesn't get Danny down.
