Default dvd question

about 4 months ago, i made a trade with a regular customer--trader

this person is not a scammer, and i trust them 100%

it was for about 20 discs , a complete set

they got the discs

they played just nice

they have since then, duplicated them 3 or 4 times and had no issues

in the last couple days, i receive a email, they have been trying their hardest , and they cant make them copy

about 4 of the set would copy

so he sends them to a friend of his--a knowledgable person-- and they cant do them either

the discs still will play in a normal dvd player, just fine

but will not copy in about 4 seperate duplicators, at least two differnt computers and several choices of software

facts

they are on ritek go5 discs 8x

they were recorded on an nec 3520a drive at 8x

and they always did play, and duplicated at least 3 other times in the last 4 months

i have traded this exact same set , probably 15 times, without problems

question

why will these not copy??

note-- i havent tried their set, and thats the next step

has this happened to anyone else

Is he still trying to copy your masters that you sent him or is it a copy of your original that he can no longer copy? I had this issue once when I traded my masters and kept the dvd on my hard drive. I then burned them to a bad batch of Ben Q discs and I could not copy them although they played fine. It does not make sense to me that he could copy the discs 3 times and then not copy anymore , unless he is no longer copying from your masters or the masters have been damaged.

I normally do not believe in trashing certain Brands, b/c to be honest, who the hell really knows who makes what anymore and which are better (seems to change daily).

THAT SAID, I am currently in the midst of reauthoring/rescue a Ritek set myself, so maybe it is a coincidence or maybe Riteks are a pain for computers to read?

Loren, I have NEVER had a problem like that with any disc I got from you

here are my thoughts

1. it is possible that they might have somehow damaged the discs, on accident, maybe a scratch or scuff or gotten some sort of cleaner on them (THIS HAPPENED TO ME ONCE, i had been cleaning bathroom, got cleaner on my hands and when i touched a disc later it damaged it)

2. the ONLY other time i have had this was when it was cheapo off brand discs, NEXXTECH i think, they degraded really fast, burnt 1 or 2 times and after that had issues

BUT I KNOW YOU USE GOOD DISCS, so i would guess that they must have somehow damaged them, on accident

id ask for 1 of the discs back to check and see whats up
to avoid any issues like that

BUT i can say to all, loren only uses good discs and 99% of what he sends me, have always been perfect,

Loren, I've run into similar issues where dvd-rs won't copy after a period of time. Normally it's either Ritek or Prodisc media, and it just seems to be a degradation of the media. Never had it with TY or Sony media. Its one of the reasons I make an extra set of my stuff - if I expect to copy them a bunch.

Do you have access to a Benq or LiteOn dvd burner? With either of them, you can run a detailed media check, to see if the recording is below normal standards.

yes this is a problem here as well, i was sold a bunch of white riteks that were fake a while back

they were junk and packaged in ritek boxes and the company, shop4tech, took them all back and even paid the shipping as well back to them

i highly doubt that i had fakes previous to trying the white ones, which turned out to be prodiscs, by shop4techs own admission

i had used riteks almost exclusively for over a year, until my source for bulk , and discounts, petered out

they were almost trouble free

this is an unreal thing to me, the fact that the discs still play, is the part that i cant figure out, i hope to get at least some back to try on my equipment, who knows what they used and what lengths they went through

it may well have been a case of well they didnt roll on the duplicator, so they must be no good

to clear up the one question, the ones i sent were a copy of the set i have here in the closet, no i didnt send anything original to anyone ever. i am useing a set for my working copy , that was made at the same time, with the same equipment. i have no problem at all, and in fact last night i ran some sets just to see what would happen, and they all were fine

the very first thing i do when i get discs, is to make copies and verify each one, i then stash the set i got from whomever, in the closet and i use a --working copy--to make more, and or watch myself, i do this to have a emergency disc in case of a screw up later, or a drop, a scratch, a loss, etc

If they copied before and now do not, the discs have probably been damaged. It was not clear if none of the 20 discs would copy or just a select few. Its not like the set you sold/traded him was never able to copy. I have discs from over 3 years ago on crappy media that copies just fine to this day, so I doubt its that especially since it still plays OK.

I never thought I would find dvds worse than office depot brand but Ritek takes the cake. A friend of mine has them and I refuse to take anything copied on them. Putrid is a mild word to describe them. Tuesday you can read them and copy and by thursday you can use them for skeet shooting.

Legislature should be passed banning them.

in the top post

it says that 4 of the disc were able to copy now

all worked fine to begin with

all copied 3 to 4 times over a period of time--with the other persons equipment

all still play just fine

note, i get at least one person every week

who wants to trade, and they cant copy the items they woudl like to tarde

i have 75% or better success rate running those discs, that the other person cant get

so perhaps ill be able to run these, if i get some from them

i need to come up with some thoughts on this problem

someone suggested the person is a scammer and wants something for free

not this time, the person has been a trade and purchase customer for over a year, and has probably 700 plus discs from me in that period

you dont go that long and then try and pull a scam for 20 discs, this person is very square

another person said that perhaps the discs were set on top of a duplicator or other electronic device and erased, probably not as well, since they still function in a normal dvd player

another person suggested they got very hot, again set on top of some electronic device, i havent read anything where the heat would make the item not copy, but still play

im lost

Didn't see that at first.

Ok so 4 out of 20 would copy, I doubt 16 discs got damaged. I don't have the solution as to why they will not copy now. I had a similiar situation happen before. Same deal, honest guy, tried to get a friend to copy them also, used different programs etc. I told him to return the discs and let me see if I can copy them. He did and I could copy them with no problem. Sent him the new set and he could copy those with no problem. I used the same media the original ones were made on, it had only been a week. I gave his returned set to a friend that watched and copied them with no problems.

Ask him if he has tried DVD Decrypter to take the files off with. Sometimes I have been unable to copy a DVD with nero, duplicators and other software but DVD Decrypter has worked fine. I have received a few discs that were very scratched up from netflix and blockbuster and play fine but will not copy. It only takes a few light scratches to make it not copy properly.

Some things to consider:
(1) Discs don't magically degrade. But lasers can. A laser has a short lifespan, and gets weaker as time goes on.
(2) Friends usually know no more than you do. So never trust somebody's third-party friend as a source of any kind of reliable info.
(3) Scratches can hurt. Then again, a totally scratched disc can still be fine.
(4) If it can play without artifact, it can copy. If it can copy without read errors, it can play.
(5) Optical media is not affected by magnetics.
(6) Heat can damage media, but only excess heat.
(7) Fingerprints are often worse than scratches.
(8) Ritek is not, and never has been, one of the best medias available.
(9) There isn't any fake Ritek. It's just really bad authentic Ritek.
(10) Scammers usually want something new, not another copy of the same thing.
(11) Once a disc is a good burn, it should stay that way for decades.
(12) Certain discs don't reflect very well. Ritek uses an organic dye that just doesn't read that well.
(13) There is most certainly a list of good media and bad media, and it's not really changed much in 4 years now.

Sounds like this person has a issues reading the discs, likely the fault of the reader drive. The player proves the discs are fine, as does the fact that they could be copied before.
