Fifteen or twenty years ago I would have said yes, but for almost the past ten years, it's been a mixed bag. Back in the 80's, Metallica were THE band with the most attitude, intensity, and talent. You could not deny the power of albums like Kill'em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets. After Cliff Burton died and they replaced him with Jason Newsted, they put out the killer Garage Days Revisited EP, which is now rare and sells for $100s in used record stores. ...And Justice For All was disappointing production-wise, with guitars and drums sounding dry, fuzzy and lacking the trademark Metallicrunch, as well as the bass being invisible--but musically, it was stunning. But just as Metallica got popular with everyone else, they shifted gears and got more commercial with Bob Rock's production, which disappointed the Metalli-purists. The self-titled Metallica album was one of their best, but they buried their thrash past for the most part on it. Their Load and Re-Load albums were very different than anything they had ever done, and while both albums had decent tracks like "King Nothing", "Bleeding Me", "Hero of the Day", and "Fuel", they just didn't cut it with a lot of fans. Metallica had become the biggest band in the land, and no one could stop them--except themselves. Jason Newsted left the band and by that point, the band was not getting along--to the point where they were about to break up. They bring in psychiatrist to help them iron out their problems and make a new album. The process gets made into a rockumentary, "Some Kind of Monster", and the album, "St. Anger", is the most bizarre album they have ever made--it's practically a Nu-metal or "math-metal" album with none of their classic solos or larger than life melodies. All angsty and edgy. It was like, "This is Metallica??!!" It would be interesting to see if Metallica can come up with something better next time around. I'm sure they can, but will they?

OK, I really like Metallica, I really, really do, but the greatest band ever? That might be stretching things a little. Greater than The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones? They're still one of my favorites, still in my Top 10, but I would have to say no.

yes.

eye personally think st. anger is an excellent album and lars's "trash cans" make the songs actually sound better, i don't care how much a lot of people think it sucks, in fact i'm wearing a st. anger shirt right now. i agree though that it didn't have the badassness as the albums between kill em all through and justice for all did. i saw them last year on the madly in anger with the world tour, i can't wait for the next one.

It would also depend on what is defined as great. The biggest fanbase, the most recognizable songs, the band that makes the most money, the most influential, etc.

I would still say that Metallica is definitely ONE of the greatest for all of the above factors. But often they have not been the most consistent band, they changed their style and image a little too often and became something totally different from what they started out being. For many bands, change is good and no one should get stuck in a musical box, but often, their changes have been too abrupt. Metallica have been identified with being the "real dudes" who were musically pure and honest in the 80's, but in the past ten years they seemed to practically cringe from being a metal band ("that's so 80's!!") and headlined Lollapalooza, cut their hair and adopted the non-guitar solo riff-rock sound that everyone else was doing.

I have never been a fan of Metallica but just because I don't like does not mean they are the worst. I don't like that genre of music

I liked Metallica but I haven't heard their music in so long I can't say if I like them now. I don't thing they are the greatest band ever, but they were good at one time in my life.
