Default TAGS poularity in 1960s?

Does anyone know if "The Andy Griffith Show" was as popular in the 1960s as it seems today, or is it one of those shows that just gets more popular as time goes on. I know it was always in the top 7 in ratings, but I am just wondering if it got a lot of buzz like Desperate Housewives and CSI does today.

I find it very odd that it was #1 in it's final season, yet the final season was probably the worst.

I find that a bit odd too. That's why I don't put a lot of stock in rating numbers.

What I find odd is that Barney Hosts a Summit Meeting was the highest rated episode. I am not sure if that was of just the final season or the entire series though. It would make sense if it were for the season.

Well, don't forget, there was a ton of bad stuff happening in and around the US at the time. The late 60's were probably the hardest years for the whole country. And shows like Andy Griffith, Jeannie, Bewitched, Star Trek, and Munsters, were a great escapism from reality.

Only two series in American television ceased production (if mayberry RFD was a different production that TAGS which is open to debate.) while their shows were number 1.

They are The Andy Griffith Show and Seinfeld.

Do you have a source for those ratings?
