Default Singing Auditions: (Song suggestions?) HELP!!

I'm currently in the process of filling out college applications.
One of the my schools request that I send a recording of myself singing any piece of music solo.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm looking for something Broadway-ish... not too amateur, but not too hard, either. And though I'm a soprano 1, I'm looking for a piece in the alto-soprano 2 range.

It would be the best if it had the word "Chicago" in the song, or if it were a song ABOUT Chicago. (I'm applying to a school in Chicago. )

Anyway, thanks in advance!

i think phantom of the opera is a good audition song. otherwise, folk songs are the way to go, man. yeah i'm being required to audition for all-state regionals in january (though i'd do it by my own will anyway) and i'm singing wayfaring stranger.

Do any of you know any good programs to download music? I need to hear the songs before I can judge, LOL.

I know it's illegal, but whatever, it's not like I'm gonna sell 'em or anything.

OT: one time, in middle school, i was in band... and we played phantom of the opera, and I got selected as the one that screamed in the middle of the song... it was cool

but anyway, I don't know much about singing, so I'd take the suggestions from those that do! (ie: the people above)

That made me laugh. It would've been cool to just scream, yeah, LOL.

I dont know how the Phantom of the Opera sounds, tho.

Don't do anything from Broadway for an audition, if you aren't properly trained. Classical voice songs are the way to go to show off your full potential.

Can you sing acapello (sp sorry I'm not big on musical terms)? Just do simple songs like Danny Boy, Ode to Peace, Amazing Grace etc. you know songs like that.

Acapella, you mean? And yeah, I guess.... but I'd rather do it with music accompaniment so that it'll offer a chance to cover any "mistakes" that I might make, HAHAHA. *Grins*

I'm still trying to pick a song. I asked my chorus teacher about it. He'll be thinking about it tonight... I'll let you guys know what I chose when I choose it.

they're just simple, and still ideal for showing vocal potential.
