what the ****????
Fonzie is no longer cool... When Fonzie went to Hollywood with the family and jumped the shark. Fonzie being afraid of having his tonsils taken out. Fonzie busting in on Potsie's class and has the entire classroom singing that stupid song abt Pump your blood... Fonzie seeing a psychiatrist for his "anger". And then not immediately standing up to those two guys who were egging him on. |

I never thought Fonzie wasn't cool anymore. I've only seen episodes from seasons 1-4. You mention the episode in which Fonzie goes to see a psychologist to manage his anger. I thought that was a very good episode. Fonzie was excellent here, in my opinion. First trying to control his anger, making these birdhouses and then finally putting on his leather jacket again, crashing the birdhouse while Butch and Bernie are watching and then saying: "Now, that could've been your heads, gentlemen!"
That is the Fonzie I know. Trying to proof everyone that he is cool enough to manage his anger, then proving that even though he manages his anger very well, he won't tolerate it when anyone bosses him around. This episode had good dialogue too, very funny. Like when Fonzie first has put of his leather jacket and put on a blue shirt, and then Butch and Bernie came in. Butch (very threatening): "I'm Butch!" Fonzie (smiling): "Hya, Butch!!!!"

Fonzie's character evolved. Just like every character in a sitcom evolves. Not always for the best, that's true (look at Chanlder from 'Friends'). But anyway, Fonzie became a bigger part of the show, so the writers needed more and bigger storylines for him. That's how they came up with that anger managment-idea. Notice that, when Richie first met Fonzie, the latter was a thug who was in a gang (forgot the name). Richie convinced him that he didin't need to be in such a gang to be cool, right? So thats's just one movement in Fonzie's character. Later movements came when his part became bigger and bigger and he moved in the Cunningham's attic.
You keep mentioning the audience. Naturally the filming in front of a live audience has nothing to do with storylines. I take it you keep this as a point of reference, right? I think from that point on, the writers began to deepen Fonzie's character, so he became more than 'just a cool guy'. He had failures just like other people, such as a temporary problem with managing his anger. (I have some doubts about the way I said things above. I'm not sure everything is correct English.) |

I can see your point. It's true. Yes his character needed to evolve. I guess, most importantly, grow up. I just wish the writers could have kept the character from being "too silly". does that make any sense?

And to RetroTvCollector: Fonzie always wearing his leather jacket was just a running gag and, more important, his trademark. He wore the jacket when he went to play tennis, when he and the gang had to be tested for the army etc. |
