"Diamond" David Lee Roth, the rock 'n' roll motormouth best known for stage moves like pouring Jack Daniels down his spandex pants, will take Howard Stern's morning spot on New York's WXRK (92.3 FM) starting Jan. 3.

Yesterday's announcement by Infinity Radio, parent of WXRK, ends months of speculation on who will step into commercial morning radio's largest shoes.

Stern earns an estimated $100 million a year for Infinity. He is moving to Sirius Satellite Radio in January because he says the FCC's often vague indecency guidelines "make it impossible for me to do my show any longer on commercial radio."

While the 51-year-old Roth made his reputation as the frontman for the hard rock band Van Halen in the '80s, his arrival signals the end of the full-time rock music format on WXRK.

While rock will still be played on weekends, the weekday K-Rock will become a primarily talk format called "Free FM," which Infinity also is launching in several other major cities.

Roth's show, 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., will be heard in seven cities, including Boston and Philadelphia, on stations that now carry Stern.

Other Stern stations will get different morning hosts, including Adam Carolla in Los Angeles and Star and Buc Wild, who are based at New York's WWPR (105.1 FM), on KXBT in Austin, Tex. Magician Penn Jillette will have a weekday one hour program on WXRK, and the radio giant is expected to announce even more brand-name broadcasts in the coming weeks.

Roth, who has never been a radio host, went on the air with Stern yesterday to talk about the new deal. He traded jokes with the shock jock and said he's ready to go.

The track record of famous entertainers as radio hosts has been mixed, with a few like Steve Harvey and Ted Nugent doing well while others like Danny Bonaduce have flopped.

"This is a bold move by Infinity" to hire big-name hosts from outside radio and put talk on so many FM stations that previously offered music, said Tom Taylor, editor of the newsletter Inside Radio.

"Now it's up to David Lee Roth," he said, "to hunker down and do it."

Infinity CEO Joel Hollander called yesterday's announcements "groundbreaking" and said he expects it will be "12-24 months" before the success of the new hosts and format is clear. He declined to project at what point the new programming could produce as much revenue as the departing Stern.

"Can this succeed? Absolutely," said Walter Sabo, a radio consultant who launched a similar weekday-talk format at WKXW in New Jersey 15 years ago. "As long as you put the right talent on the right stage."

LOL...u will love it TJL!!! I don't even listen to FM anymore. Awesome stuff. You can get your Sirius on-line too when you get it!!! Worth it!!! No commercials!!!

For those of you fans who haven't listen or seen in the TV commercial for the new Free-FM, beginning Monday, David Lee Roth is coming to the grand opening of 92.3 Free-FM. I'm not into his own talk show because I've heard one song called "Just a Gigilo/I Ain't Go Nobody" and it was a great song. I also loved the music video using the MTV parody called "Dave TV". I've seen it since I was younger and that was it. The song was originally sung by Louis Prima, but David's version is better. I want you to watch not one but two commercials.

I sampled a little bit of Roth this morning, I mean a little. Not enough to judge him on his own, but then I really had no plans to make it an ongoing thing. Just wanted to see what he's up to. But listening to WXRK post-Stern is all I need to confirm my moving to the other side with Stern. Hopefully I'll get my satellite radio this week so I can hear him on the first day.

Here is what Allan Sniffen, the (webmaster of ceremonies of Musicradio WABC website) has to say about David Lee Roth as he posted on NYRMB:

First, let's be fair. Day 1 of any show is going to have its kinks. There were too many "where's the caller?" type problems because someone wasn't potted up or there were miscues. Those things will straighten out with practice. In addition, it's tough on whoever takes over for Stern. No matter how good, there's bound to be a lot of criticism. Most listeners to talk shows take time to warm up to whoever is on. It's a slow building format. When Howard Stern first appeared on WNBC, he was blasted for not sounding tight enough, for not sounding enough like Imus, for not being funny... it was a long list.

Ok... With all of that said, here's what I think would help this show based on what I've heard thus far.

1. Focus. What is Roth supposed to be? Is he supposed to be talking real issues like bringing up kids? Is he supposed to be doing guy talk? What? He's all over the place. Even when responding to a single phone call, he drifts from whatever the caller brings up into three or four other things. He's hard to follow.

2. He needs a partner or at least other named people in the studio with him. Having background voices laughing sounds forced. He needs a sidekick or at least a named producer with his mic open. Stern was never a solo act. In fact, most of these kinds of shows are not. Why does Roth sound like he's solo? That's especially hard for someone who hasn't done radio.

3. The show can't be quite so self serving. He's spending too much time talking about being an EMT, about why he doesn't have kids and the like. He's got to latch on to things everyone can relate to. You need a fallback position to emphasize. With Stern, it was talking about boobs (as an example). Even if it gets repetitive, you need your own hook.

Finally... and this is a criticism of 92.3's positioning. Why does this station sound just like K-Rock did with respect to the adolescent liners and promos? That was one of K-Rock's biggest mistakes over the last ten years. It sounded like it was being programmed to high school kids. The new format should NOT follow that example yet it sounds like they're going out of their way to do just that. It won't work. Stern succeeded because he has plenty of listeners over 30. David Lee Roth is himself an "older" guy. Go with that. No, it shouldn't sound like WOR. But to really succeed, this station needs to do more than appeal to high school kids. Theoretically, given Roth's background, he should be able to do that. Don't surround him with K-Rock type promos that turn off that demo.

I'll say one thing. He just ended his show playing Rufus' "You Got The Love" so that's a thumbs up in my book.

Luckily I was working in our shop today, so i had the opportunity to listen to some of Diamond Dave's second show.
I'll give him credit, he does have lots to say about a wide variety of subjects, but talk radio has never been my thing.

Howard had a large supporting cast of characters to play off of, so I'm not really into listening to one person talk for four hours.

That being said, I wish him luck and I will probably tune in occasionally. I'd be interested to see how the show evolves.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to price some Sirius radios.
