Knowing what I know abt domestic violence, anger management, being a controller, etc. I would consider James to be a controller. There is a domestic violence "wheel" that lists the signs of domestic violence, including physical and emotional and verbal abuse.
James saying things such as: "I'm gonna put that woman in her place"; telling Florida she can't have a job; telling Thelma she can't have a job; constantly yelling; throwing the chair, etc. You all know what he has said, done etc. Anyhow, he could fall in the category of being an emotional and verbal abuser. Probably more emotional. It may not have been something to consider back in the 70's, but nowadays this constant yelling at Florida, yelling at her in front of the kids, especially Michael constant anger. One could say he is yelling because of the stress of no steady work, their financial problems, etc. but that is no reason for all that. What do some of you think of this? |

James only yelled at Florida in the episode-"Hypertension" Other than that, he always treated her with respect. |

OK I will admit, I didn't like when he told her he didn't want her to go to school. |

James WAS old school, but some of the things he did didn't seem too respectful. Like when he said, "Hey woman you don't tell me when to talk." I know they were having an arguement, but that was mean. |

When James said that women belong in two places the kitchen and the bedroom, I think James saw the error of his ways, Florida got her two cents in after he said that. It's like when you fight with your husband/boyfriend/ girlfriend/wife, sometimes you tend to say the first thing that comes to mind, Not thinking before you speak. I think James treated Florida with lots of respect and he loved her more then anything. I don't the he belittled her, he didn't call her out her name, he didn't hit her. Yeah he yelled, she yelled also when they had a fight. Who doesn't yell sometimes when they get into an argument with their spouse
I didn't see anything wrong with him telling Thelma that she couldn't work at McDonald's, I would have told her the same thing. I could see if she was working from 4-9 but not till 11 at night. I would tell my daughter that she just got fired too LOL |

He may not have been a physical abuser, but he was surely out of control with his anger. He wanted to lay it on Michael with the belt and he said so right in front of Michael's school principal. Yes it is "old school" but in this day and age, we now know that "old school" is not necessarily the norm. He may not have hit Florida. She would have kicked his you know what anyways. But he needed anger management. Always yelling. He needed to be calm and learn that he can get his message across without that unnecessary yelling. Telling his wife what she can or can't do. His "pride" is no reason to tell your wife she can't work, she can do this or can't do that. Not going to school is way outta line. She wanted to better herself. He constantly interrupted Florida when she tried to explain to James why she went to the women's group. She wasn't in agreement with the women, but James never allowed her to speak her mind that she felt the same way abt the group like James did. James didn't need to TELL HER that the women's group was a bad idea. She knew that already. There are way more James' moments that haven't been said here, but you all know them. I only focused on these. These are just a few examples. There are waaaaaaaaay more.

Some of you guys crack me up. You're using 2005 thinking to analyze a sitcom that first aired about 30 years ago! I'm guessing most of you must be under 35 years old on here. The only issue I'll address is a teenager working until 11 p.m. Thirty years ago 11 was LATE...today that's when most young folks just get going.
