Cool Happy 60th Birthday, John Lithgow

Date of Birth: October 19, 1945
Hometown: Rochester, NY
Real Name: John Arthur Lithgow
Height: 6' 4"

If "born to the theater" has meaning in determining a person's life path, then John Lithgow is a prime example of this truth. Son of a retired actress and a father who was both a theatrical producer and director, he moved frequently as a child while his father founded and managed local and college theaters and Shakespeare festivals throughout the Midwest of the United States.

Not until he was 16, and his father became head of the McCarter Theater in Princeton New Jersey, did the family settle down. But for John, the theater was still not a career. He won a scholarship to Harvard University, where he finally caught the acting bug as well as found a wife. Harvard was followed by a Fulbright scholarship to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Returning from London, his rigorous dramatic training stood him in good stead, and a distinguished career on Broadway gave him one Tony award for "The Changing Room", a second nomination in 1985 for "Requiem for a Heavyweight", and a third in 1988 for "M. Butterfly". But with critical acclaim came personal confusion, and in the mid '70's he and his wife divorced. He entered therapy, and in 1982 his life started in a new direction.

As the decade of the '90's came around he found that he was spending too much time on location, and another career move brought him to television in the hugely successful series "3rd Rock from the Sun" (1996). This production also played a role in bringing him back together with the son from his first marriage, Ian Lithgow, who has a regular role in the series as a dim-witted student. For his starring role as Dick Solomon in the 1996-2001 NBC sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun, he has received six Primetime Emmy Award nominations one for each of the six seasons and three wins in 1996, 1997 and 1999 in the category of "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series."

Previously, Lithgow was the recipient of a 1986 Primetime Emmy Award in the category of "Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series" for his appearance in an episode of the Amazing Stories anthology show. He received three additional Primetime Emmy Award nominations in 1984, 1986 and 1995.

Throughout his career, many of Lithgow's most successful and noteworthy projects have been adaptations of earlier works. In 1983 and 1984, he was nominated for Academy Awards in the category of "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" for his performances as Roberta Muldoon in The World According to Garp and as Sam Burns in Terms of Endearment; both films were screen adaptations of popular novels.

Off-screen, Lithgow is known by Star Wars fans for his 1983 and 1996 performances in National Public Radio adaptations of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, in which he portrayed Yoda a voice role originated theatrically by Frank Oz.

In 2002, Lithgow won a Tony Award in the category of "Best Leading Actor in a Musical" for his portrayal of J. J. Hunsecker a role originated theatrically by Burt Lancaster in the Broadway stage adaptation of the 1957 film Sweet Smell of Success. Currently, Lithgow is starring as Lawrence Jameson a role originated theatrically by David Niven and later assumed by Michael Caine in a Broadway musical adaptation of the 1988 film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels itself a remake of the 1964 film Bedtime Story.

In 2005, this role earned Lithgow a second Tony nomination in the category of "Best Leading Actor in a Musical," an award that went to his co-star, Norbert Leo Butz. He also won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play in The Changing Room, his Broadway debut. He was nominated two other times: for Requiem for a Heavyweight and M. Butterfly.

Lithgow also makes occasional appearances on stage and television singing children's songs and accompanying himself on guitar. He resides in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and is a Harvard University graduate, as well as a former member of its Board of Overseers.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Lithgow.

If you want to see John Lithgow in a great movie check out Brian De Palma's Blow Out (1981) starring John Travolta.

Another movie that De Palma and Lithgow made together is the 1975 film Obsession. It isn't as great as Blow Out, but still really good.
