It has been my dream to someday live in NYC, and I want to do it while Im young. Whether Im there for a month, a year, or 10 years, I want to atleast say Ive lived there. Anyways, my question[s] are for those who have the experience of living in the city. I know that its an EXPENSIVE place to live, but any info on cheap living would be helpful. I know that same places arent exactly the friendliest place to live, and I do want to try and avoid those places. I am a small town girl after all!
Out of sheer boredom I browsed for apartments earlier today online and found some cheapies between $400-$650, which is pretty much what Id be able to afford. Would it be wise to bring my car, or sell it? I dont want it to pretty much rot up here and still pay insurance for it, or if I should pay the money and keep it in a garage -- just in case. Anyways, my goal is to be there by September 2006. Any advice or things Id need to know would be MUCH appreciated.

I lived in NYC for awhile. First off, sell your car. There is no need for a car here. Get around by subway or bus or worst case scenario, taxi. Just out of curiosity, what area did you see a manhattan apartment for 400 bucks?

Live on the Lower East Side. It's cheaper here, and we can be neighbors, LOL.

That's pretty cheap for the upper west side. I guess it depends exactly how "up" you are. |

I'd take it, you are not going to find anything cheaper. Have a parent go with you to check for stuff. On paper, and seeing the pics, it does seem nice.

![]() Any advice I should know? Places I should avoid, etc? Im not gonna be walking the streets at 2am or anything, but its gonna take some getting used to living alone in a big city like that. Places I should visit? Im going to be going there alone, and while I do have a couple online friends from NYC, Id like to make others.. any places [besides a bar lol] I should go to meet people? |

I wouldn't recommend any of the places I use to hang out in. I was a club hopper. I went to places like The Limelight, The Palladium, The Tunnel, Save the Robots etc. Just soak in the neighborhood. There is nothing like the city around Christmas time.

So you want to move to NYC huh?
Welcome young Jedi, we've been expecting you... Seriously, if you want to live in Manhattan, I only have one word for you - roommates. That's pretty much the only way you're going to afford living here. You don't need a car, mass transit is your friend, always tip the bartenders, the handbags they sell on the street are not repeat NOT actual Coach bags, and Times Square is always crowded. That's pretty much all I know.
