Is there a reason that they had John Amos' character, James Evans, die at the end of the show? I mean usually they do that when the real life person (actor/actress) dies, but he's still alive.

John Amos was not wanted after an interview he did with Jet or Ebony magazine. He said not so nice things abt Good Times. Norman Lear decided to fire him, so that's the reason his character was killed off. No other way to get rid of the character, and it wouldn't have worked to have some other actor come in and play James. Besides, Norman didn't want a father to be on the show. He wanted Flo to be a single parent.

He didn't die at the end of the show, he died at the beginning of season 4. Amos was in a bitter feud with the producers and they fired him. They killed him off, mainly because I think Norman Lear wanted to make sure he never came back. Lear never wanted a father figure in the show.
