I don't know that much about this but I believe Nero is considered one of the best. (At least the ~$100 version, not the Lite version). One place you may want to visit is videohelp.com

I use MPEG-VCR (Womble) and VideoReDo Plus for editing my MPEG2 files.

I don't know of any editing programs that are free. I do highly recommend VideoReDo Plus, but it will set you back $50. You probably should have gotten an authoring program bundled with software when you bought your burner.

Regarding VideoRedo:
I downloaded the trial version of this program & it's GREAT!!!! I'm such a newbie when it comes to creating a nice set of my own and so many programs I've downloaded don't work for me or don't work properly (audio/video out of synch, audio MISSING, my creation is jumpy compared to original, etc.) or are just too intimidating to me (IE changing settings), what with encoders & codecs & such. I was actually able to edit out commercials of two shows I'd recorded & burn a DVD with Nero & it really played on my standalone DVD! (The sound you hear is me picking myself up off the floor!) I'm probably going to end up buying this, so thanks to both of you for the info on this! (still in shock)
