Default Child abuse and discipline

Could someone please explain the difference between the two? Grown ups these days are afraid to discipline their kids because of child abuse! For example, a few weeks ago, I stopped by my mother's house one morning before I went to work. She puts my nine year-old nephew on the bus every morning. He moves slow in the morning and she sometimes have to help him dress. So one day she was trying to put his shirt on and he snapped at my mother. I then stepped in and he backed talked me and swung at me and connected. I then smacked him and picked him up by the neck. My mother went after me and told me to get off of him before someone call child protector on me. I'll admit, I was wrong to pick him up by the neck. But no one talks back to my mother, and I don't expect a bratty nine year-old to. She raised 6 kids by herself and didn't deserve that. The way he snapped at my mom, I would have got my ass whooped as a child. Am I suppose to stand there and let this nine year-old talk back to whom I consider the greatest mom in the world?

Child Abuse= beating them
Disipline= hitting them lightly

But honestly, I think that it's better to just scold them. Whenever someone hit me when I was younger it just got me more mad, but when someone yelled at me or sent me to me room I would learn my lesson.

Why did you disrespect your father? You are underage. He asked you a question and you told him to shut up and you cursed him. Same thing what I mentioned what my nephew did.

it's really a fine line because when I grew up, I wasn't hit at all, but the fear of ever being hit kept me at bay. I would never talk to my mom or dad the way your nephew did or how the above poster talked to their dad (drunk). Either way, it's hard. My boyfriend believes in spanking, I don't. but with my son who is three I will admit I have had to spank him. With my girls, I recall I spanked my middle daughter real bad on two ocassions, only because she didn't come home afterschool and I was just abt ready to call 911 cuz I was so scared. When she walked in that door, my anger fueled my fear and I whacked her on the butt. I was crying after cuz I was so damn happy that she came home, yet I was so upset that she made me so scared that something happened. My oldest, I didn't spank her. Didn't have to.

You remind me soooooo much of a cousin of mine when she was in her teens and still acts this way (the underage irresponsisble drinking) in her 20s. She has a baby and was caught driving over the speed limit WITH her son in the car. The cops had to throw her in jail a couple of times. She's 22 right now. My aunt (her mom) had a difficult time keeping an eye on her.

my dad doesn't hit me or anything but obviously he's oblivious to the existence of mental abuse though. i've yelled "i hate you", "go to hell", "**** you", "shut the **** up", etc so many times because i get so fed up with his ****. i'm not going to go into all the details and stories but just to assure you that this is no "I HATE MY DAD CUZ HE TREATZ ME LIKE A LIL KID/GIVES MY BROTHER A BIGGER ALLOWANCE/DIDNT GET ME THE BIRTHDAY PRESENT I WANTED EVEN THO HE COULDA AFFORDED IT" bull **** he treated my mom the same way before she died and made her cry. and it's really messed me up.
