Post Midwest Serial Killer

Hey all

I remember watching an episode on um about a serial killer who shot women behind counters of their stores. It happened across the midwest. i remember it being a strange, horrible case. Did they ever catch him?

Default That sounds like the I-70 Killer

Senseless murders. I would like to see that guy caught as much as anyone UM has targeted. Incredible he let the black man live, after he wisely refused to step into the back room. Case is unsolved, but I found a clip on Court TV's Crime Library indicating there may be a "person of interest.":http://www.crimelibrary.com/notoriou...daniel_remeta/

"Before Belt, there was the "I-70 Killer," a maniac who police say targeted women working alone in stores located near the highway. That killer is thought to have slain seven women between 1992 and 1994. An eighth murder victim, a Terre Haute, Ind., man who wore a ponytail and an earring, may have been mistaken for a woman. One woman survived the attempt on her life.

The same .22-caliber pistol was used in six of the nine shootings during the early-'90s spree. Police say this pistol was also the murder weapon in the deaths of five women in Missouri, Indiana and Kansas and the Terre Haute man.

Although authorities have identified a "person of interest" in those cases, the killings formally remain open and unsolved."

yep, that was who it was, the I-70 killer. He used the highway as a means to commit his reign of terror. I had a look at that article, and drew the conclusion that maybe he stopped because he was sent to prison on an unrelated charge. Maybe hed died. It just seems weird someone that warped would stop unless something prevented him.

I remember reading another article on this case a year or two ago. Authorities were still working on it, including utilizing computers to cross check gas receipts, hotel receipts, convenience store receipts, etc. to try to find persons who were in the respective areas at the time of each murder. They said in the early '90s when the murders occured they had to basically do everything like that by hand, that's how unsophisticated the system was.

Of course, a guy like that could pay by cash for gas, etc. and merely drive back to his home after each murder, not leaving any paper trail at all. Very difficult case to solve.

That would have been extremely irritating to conduct their affairs manually. How frustrating for the police!! It will be even more frustrating for them that the likelihood of him ever getting caught is diminishing. As with the case of BTK, we can always hold out hope something will be uncovered or he will make a mistake.

Yeah, but BYK got a thrill about sending letters to the police and taunting them. BTK craved the exposure and the attention and it got him caught eventually.

The I-70 killer has not attempted to contact any authorities as far as I know and doesn't seem to want any attention any more. So, there is almost zero chance this case would get solved unless he is already in jail and someone somehow gets a jailhouse confession out of him but inmates don't make credible witnesses.

So, he probably got away with multiple murders but it was said of Ted Bundy that if he could control his urges and stop killing then he would have gotten away with at least 30 murders scott free but he kept going and got more sloppy and eventually got caught.
