Default Serenity - Sci Fi At Its Best

I had the pleasure of catching "Serenity," the feature length spinoff of Joss Whedon's "Firefly," and I loved it. Fans of this great short lived series will not be disappointed.

It's a combination of series finale for the show and the first stop on what will hopefully be a long film franchise.

A great film, go and see it if you love sci fi.

Anyone else get a chance to see it yet?

I'm gonna check the Firefly DVD out. I am mixed on Joss. Buffy is my fave show of all time, but Angel was only "okay" to me (besides the fourth season which was amazing) so I dunno if Firefly will be a favorite or a show I'll want to sell back

I'll give Joss credit, he's made a very impressive debut as a film director. The action/fight scenes were well done, and the whole look of the movie was great.

I would also like to give a special shout out to the dimwit film critic from the NY Post who dismissed "Serenity" as a movie for fans of the show only.

No **** Sherlock!

Who knows, if the dvd sells well and this movie rakes in some cash, Fox or some other network might ressurect it like they did Family Guy.

because of drama with the networks (Fox aired the 2 hour pilot of the show as the LAST episode they aired for one), Whedon has no plans to bring the series back, but he does want Serenity to be the start of a film franchise like Trek went from tv to movies.

I think the movie could win over new fans. I bought the DVD last night because I would like to support Joss' entrance into the film world, and thought the pilot episode was great (but what was Fox thinking skipping that episode until they pulled the plug, honestly?).

I think the movie will do well at the box office, even if the show wasn't a huge hit, it has obtained a nice size cult following over the past 3 years and Joss Whedon fans are a loyal cult fanbase, they'll be like Star Wars fans and will go see Serenity multiple times. I know if Joss ever decides to do a Buffy movie (the 1992 one doesn't count, lol) with Gellar, Hannigan and so on, I'm sure I'd go see it at least two or three times.

Another show to check out if you like Joss is Veronica Mars. Joss is even going to make a cameo appearence on the show later this season. I missed the show totally last season but am taping this season and will catch up once I watch all of season 1 on DVD

I think it's kind of a catch 22 situation - you want to attract people to see "Serenity" but IMO you have to be somewhat familiar with the storyline of "Firefly" to understand the characters and their relationships with each other.
Not to say that someone unfamiliar with the source material won't enjoy the movie. The do a good job of giving some expostion at the beginning.

I hope it does well at the box office. Hopefully people will see the movie and go buy the DVDs, but more importantly, they'll make a sequel.

I think Joss will wanna do a sequel regardless, you can tell how much he stands behind Firefly. Even after the show was cancelled, he gave Nathan Fillion (who was the actually the most vicious bad guy ever on the series) a part in the last episodes of Buffy and Gina Torres (who was a great villian) and Adam Baldwin parts on Angel to keep them employed.

What I'm trying to say is that.... if you truly do need to see the show to appreciate the movie, most people will feel unsatisfied when going to see it this weekend. They should offer a recap of the entire series shortly before the movie begins.
that does sound like a reasonable thing, have maybe a 10-minute prequel film that airs before the film starts with the series in a nutshell.

Firefly was doomed on Fox from the start, especially when they aired the series out of production order (the pilot was aired LAST), Joss Whedon shows are very serial-ish where they absolutely must be seen in order to make sense and Fox didn't respect that the way WB did.

well, Serenity opened at second place with $10 million, which I guess isn't too terribly bad for a show that only lasted 15 episodes and no real stars (okay, I know Adam Baldwin was great in Full Metal Jacket, but do you realize what year that came out?). It's getting good word of mouth so we'll see if it plummet in the second weekend or if it becomes a sleeper hit.

I'm enjoying the DVD a lot

I didn't expect it to make 100 million bucks this week, but since it does have a lot of critics and fans saying nice things about it, hopefully it will attract a larger audience down the road...

I'm gonna go see it sometime next week, after I finish the DVD set.

I do think the show is great but Fox just isn't worthy of Joss Whedon's talents.

"Firefly" would have done great as a Sci Fi Channel original series. It certainly would have had a greater chance of surviving there.

yes, and Sci-Fi actually realizes the importance of airing shows in their production order. You could tell Fox wanted Firefly doomed from the start when they didn't even air the pilot episode until December and started with episode 2 (or is it 3 since the pilot was double-length?).

I admit though it is kinda funny rooting for Nathan Fillion considering he is the same guy that gouged Xander's eye out on Buffy, lol.

Caleb was definately the biggest (with actual form) evil that show ever had, a total about-face from Mal.
