Default Every Breath You Take-Love or Stalker Song?

People have different perspectives on the song Every Breath You Take, originally by Sting and The Police, but it mostly comes down to this: Half of the people in the world who listened to this song probably see it as a love song, the other half probably think it's about a psycho stalker watching one from afar. Here are some theories (in verbatim) I found on InThe80s.com. I think some of them are rather wack.

The song was written from the point of view of a police officer who falls in love from a distance. His job is to keep surveillance on a woman and he begins to fall in love/become obsessed by her.

This song is written with anger in mind of losing the person you love. You love the person...and you know what tore the two of you apart. But you cannot help your personality (this is key), so you lose the love... Your jealousy pushes your loved one away... Seeing, watching every breath you take...you do not trust...and you will lose your love. Personality decides the love you choose for your life. Pete

It's not at all about love or a lover stalking his lovee! It's about the British oppressive regime on it's people and the big brother idea.

This IS SORT OF a love song BUT millions got it WRONG!!!! GOTCHA!!! It?s about a nearly-paranoic jealous and obsessed man who can't keep an eye off her woman. Sting said this on VH1: people come to him to tell him they married to this song; so he says to them .... GOOD LUCK!

I heard that "Every Breath you Take" is not a love song at all, but that it is about the KGB and the control that they had over their people. I heard that Sting was disturbed that Americans saw it as a love song.

What's your take?

That's easy- It's a love song... the guy just loves being a stalker. Seriously, for me it's one of the best love songs.

Remember that show on VH-1, where they would talk about a song, give 3 meanings to it, and you had to figure out which one was correct? Well, this song was on it once, and Sting said it was about his ex. Least thats what I heard lol.

Ok this is kinda weird but I always thought that it was about a guy who died and is watching over his friend/lover whatever from heaven. It just doesn't sound like a stalker song. But eh I don't know. I really don't get into analyzing songs I think every listener should have their own message and image from the song.

Sure thing.

Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take
I'll be watching you

Every single day
And every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay
I'll be watching you

Oh, can't you see
You belong to me?
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake
I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around, but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold, and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby please,

Oh, can't you see
You belong to me?
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake
I'll be watching you
Every move you make, every step you take
I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you

Aw I love that song, but I can see why some people would think it's a stalker song. Just like Clay's "Invisible"

Chad thought that was a song about a pervert watching a girl take her clothes off in her room

I never thought of the "Every Breath" song being a stalker song before. But, I too, can see how people can get the idea from the lyrics.

LOL, what you said about Clay reminded me of a short discussion we had in Econ class earlier this week when my teacher mentioned Clay's name and someone said "Ew! He has that stalker song 'Invisible'!"

Anyway, I love Every Breath You Take too. If it really is a stalker song, then it's one of my guilty pleasures.
