My brother works for Trader Joe's. For those who don't know, Trader Joe's is a speciality grocery store...they sell a lot of natural and organic products under their own label. The chain started in California almost 50 years ago.

My brother just called me from work. He was holding back tears, and told me that one of his co-workers who was working the night shift was crushed to death at about 4 this morning. A delivery truck was backing into the loading dock and was having trouble and stopped. For some unknown reason, the employee went in between the truck and the loading dock. The driver didn't know it, and backed right into him.

I didn't know the guy who died. This isn't a condolence thread. I'm just in total shock. The poor guy was 34, and my brother said he was the nicest guy going. I just feel so bad. I burst into tears when my brother told me. He said they have counselors coming in for employees and some big safety organization, OSHA, is there investigating what happened.

I'm trying to get a handle on why I feel so utterly sad over someone I never met. When my brother called me, he was at the store and couldn't talk much, but when I cried, he told me that he'd call me later because he, "can't cry now". His voice was so sad. He's worked with the man for four years.

I also keep thinking that it could have been my brother that it happened to.

That's a shame. I used to work part time as a shipping clerk and loaded/unloaded trucks all the time. You really have to be careful around those loading docks. I would have never jumped down into it with a truck there. Makes you wonder what that guy was thinking. I understand the shock of it all too. When I was in HS the neighbor guy down the street was working for some construction outfit and a wall fell on him and crushed him to death. He was only about 27 I believe.
