the social club just finished the first season of moonlighting and i'll write from my notes on that later.
i'm a bit surprised (i have no idea why) at the intensity of reaction over cybill shephard. hands down everyone truly loves her as maddie hayes. they think that she's beautiful, funny, sexy, charming, and a star. (the goal of the club is to see this as if it aired for the first time the evening the club watches it.) bruce willis is liked, but not as much as cybill shepard, and in one of the discussions the club has, it was decided that that's because cybill Was the star then and the show showcased her. and the overwhelming view is that shepard is carrying willis. according to the club, if they had seen moonlighting the night that it aired, and that time was now, bruce willis has some catching up to do and cybill shepard is going to be a huge star! i can't wait until they see season two, when willis seems to relax into acting. |

I have stated this before but I have to repeat it.
After watching most( I still haven't watched Atlas Belched) of the episodes repeatedly from seasons 1 and 2 on DVDs, I am blown away (again) by how fantastic Cybill was as Maddie Hayes. As you can hear on the commentaries, so was Glenn Caron.Cybill was phenomenal, and deserved that Emmy. She became overshadowed, I think, because Bruce was an upcoming star and everyone knew it - she was already an established star so most of the attention started to focus on him, and I think Glenn and the writers started to follow that trend as well as the show progressed to its final demise. CYBILL SHEPHERD WAS MADDIE HAYES AND NO ONE ELSE COULD EVER BE THAT CHARACTER. She made us laugh and cry and yell at the screen - she was simply terrific. So was he, but that's another topic. |

Well said, Kis. I agree with everything you said. Cybill has always been my favourite out of the two, even though I love Bruce too. And I do think she was overshadowed by Bruce's up and coming rise to stardom. No one else could have played Maddie Hayes and the show would not be what it is without her.

I can't pick a favorite between the two. I just loved both characters and Bruce and Cybill were just perfect for the parts. You are right Kismet and Gem noone else could have played the part of Maddie Hayes. Same with David. Bruce was perfect for the part. I don't think the show would have been what it was without either one of them. They were so great together.

I don't know who I would have liked better if I saw the show the day it first aired. Truth is, I didn't even know Bruce Willis when I watched Moonlighting for the first time (about 3 years ago). Okay, I saw him in Mad About You once, so I knew his face, and when I saw him on screen I kept watching because I was wondering what he was like. And then I saw Cybbie! I knew her from a movie as well, and I liked her character Maddie Hayes soooo much!! She did it so well (Bruce too). I like Cybill her personality, I think that's the reason why I like her better than Bruce.

Ouch! Glad you corrected that!
I agree on what you guys say. Cyb is sooooo good playing Maddie. Bruce was one word for me.... ATTRACTION! I really started to like his part in Season 2. The he became a REAL man. Although he never lost his boyish touch.... Maddie moved me more because of the emotion that Cyb threw in her part. And this was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen on TV. I feel blessed that I have seen them both in real life! Greetz Taz |

While on the subject, you know what else is funny to me, especially now, as an adult, is how much more I identify with the truth of Maddie -- she's usually right, you know? Most of her points in their arguments I totally agree with. THough I agree with his, too, sometimes at the same time, so I guess that makes me Cyb with an "S".
And I think you guys are right in that Bruce "the actor" got to blossom at Cyb's expense. She was much looser and funnier in earlier seasons, and got more serious as time went on. Granted, anyone would have to be, given the direction of the stories, but some of my favorite Maddie moments are ones from 1st and 2nd season where she is just balls out silly -- my all time fav, methinks, being her chewing gum and looking at him blankly during the steakout in season 1. GENIUS. i think i've said that in here b/f, but i do love it. and I think lots of that is her personal joy as an actress at finding this fab part and great chemistry with her co-star. Then, drama, drama, drama, of course. Personal and otherwise. Anyone here read her book? I'm sure you have, dumb Q. But as juvenile as it is, does anyone wonder if the course of the show would have shifted if the La-z-boy thing played out different? I sure do. Maybe they'd have, like, smiled more or something in subsequent seasons. I don't know. But then, it suprised me that nothing more happened btw. them, b/c I always felt like they were lovers gone bad and let that leak into the show a bit. But then, I was 13 at the time and read romance into everything. THOUGH I MUST SAY, i am recently vindicated by the tangental news that Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas got it on during Romancing the Stone. That made me feel slightly less purile and silly. Check one for the cheap sentamentalist seats. |

I don't mean to doubt Cybill, and we know Bruce isn't talking, but I've never completely believed the official version of their off screen relationship. I agree that they started to act more like scorned lovers than warring co-stars.
(I also LOVE Romancing the Stone so that news was interesting to me too! They also had amazing chemistry and now we know why!! )

I didn't believe a word about the La-z-Boy story. Never did, never will. Kathleen and Michael finally confessed -- good to hear that news. Plus, has anyone else noticed that the time frame has now changed concerning their date - it has now moved up to early first season - I think it was later on in her book. I always thought they were really mad at each other during Atomic Shakespeare time. Next thing you know, Cy is pregnant. |

I know I definitely believe the La-z-boy story was a load of %$#@. Let's see - Cybill, one of the most sexual/sensual women in the world, doesn't go through with it because it wouldn't be right. Uh huh. Yeah right!
I truly believe they loved, hated, lusted, fought, kissed and spat their way through Moonlighting. He knew how to push her buttons and she knew how to push his. I could go on and on but I don't want to be the only one who gives their opinion. I wish I had my own website so I could put all my ML/BW/CS thoughts down - believe me, there's lots. |

i think that some of the most intense, frustrating, passionate love affairs i've had were with men i didn't even kiss.
the timing was off, we worked together and it would have made working too hard, one of us was already involved, any number of reasons. but, boy, let me tell you, unsatified love makes for such intense feelings of hate/love on both of the persons parts. it is really hell on earth. for both. something you don't want to revisit. |

I always felt like the way she told the story in the book (and good call on the discrepancies -- I noticed that too) was not the whole story. And it seems strange that she'd not be more insulted by the outcome in the way she tells it, you know? I mean, someone who to that point had been fairly aggressive about getting the men she wanted (and SHOUT OUT TO YOU SISTA!) suddenly not getting him? I mean, I know I'd be ticked.
Which, on the flip side, does lend the thing some credibility, I must admit. Maria is right on that point -- sometimes its worse when its stymied. |
