Does anyone know how many pilots that Bert Convy hosted Match Game before Ross Shaffer?

Yes, there was in fact a pilot for MG '90 that happened I think in late '89 or so. There were some differences between the actual version w/ Ross Shafer and the pilot.
1). Instead of the sliding breakaway strips that melded the celebrities faces, they actually had them on a turning sphere, almost similar to the '70s version turning screen. 2). The circular round neons actually flashed. 3). There was no "Match-Up!" round, I think. 4). The game was palyed like its' '70s counterpart, but with a few differences. They did not play for dollars like it did when it made it to air. Those are the only differences I can think of for now. |

No, just part of the description for the above statements that I've just mentioned.

But at the game show pilot light page that said... The one I saw was marked as Pilot #5. There's just more than a pilot.

Yes, actually there were five pilots made for Match Game in 1989, including the pilot #5. This was a pilot "week."
It was set to be with Bert Convy as the host, but as the pilot light site says, he became ill with a cancerous tumor in his brain and Ross Shafer was selected for the job afterwards. |

They were: Brad Garrett, Marsha Warfield, Charles Nelson Reilly, Khrystyne Haje, Jerry Van Dyke, and Teri Copley.
There was a clip of it featured on VH-1's Game Show Moments Gone Bananas, episode 1. |

Those were apparently all the celebs for those pilot episodes.
Remember: for a game show, they usually tape 5 episodes (a week's worth in one day), constituting an end result of said pilot "week" for this version. I should have stated that there is a clip of ONE of the pilots on the episode one of the VH-1 series. |

Only a clip of one of them has been aired so far, like I mentioned on VH-1's Game Show Moments Gone Bananas episode #1.

I saw a clip of it on the 10 most embarrassing Game show moments. I recognized Nell Carter.
