Murdered girls circa 1991 episode - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

another case I remember now that I saw a long time ago....there were 2 young women who were murdered. At least one of their bodies were found in a pile of snow. I remember something about a pair of orange socks, one of which was found on one victim, the other of which was found on the other. I believe the murders were committed at different times, but the matching socks lead police to believe the same person killed both of them. I also seem to recall a van, and the man raping them in the back of the van. I think that may be how they both ended up with the orange socks on. I recall the one girl was in a real rush to get dressed when she was trying to get out of the van. Does anyone remember this case at all? I might be off on a few details, so you might have to work with it a little. Just curious if this case was ever resolved.

Also, there was a man who led some kind of religious cult and ran a virtual sweat shop that exploited his congregation. He made milllions off of them, then disappeared, not before taking his wife's dead body out of the tomb he had constructed for her (ewwww!) Anybody know if they ever found him (and his poor wife's remains)?

The first case you mentioned has been discussed here before. It was about the 1982 murders of Annette Kay Schnee and Barbara "Bobbie" Oberholtzer.

Barbara's husband, Jeff Oberholtzer, was considered a suspect, but was eventually ruled out. His being ruled out was mentioned in an update, which also mentioned that the cops were now looking at other possibilities.

The second story you're talking about is Tony Alamo and it is a very bizarre case. To my knowledge it hasn't been aired on Lifetime. Here is a rather lengthy article about him:

Hey Kane, thanks for the link about the Oberholtzer/Schnee case. I've never been able to find a link about it before. I appreciate it. I still think this case was probably the scariest murder segment UM ever showed. The whole idea of being driven out in the middle of nowhere in bitterly cold temperature and killed like that is terrifying just to think about.

ilovejustinw, I read a book called "Monster" which talks about the Oberholzter/Schnee case, as well as several other attacks/killings that took place during that time period. A man named Thomas Luther, who was arrested for the murder of a woman in 1995 - is suspected in their murders. There's not a doubt in my mind that he is the killer.

Thanks for all the info. These episodes aired so long ago that I don't remember all the details of them.

Was I correct about the women being raped or held captive in a van, or am I getting another case mixed up with this one? I knew I remembered correctly about the orange socks and the mound of snow. That is creepy. Of course I guess any murder case is creepy, but this one is especially. The ones that I can still remember today are the creepiest ones to me, particularly this case, the one involving Gretchen Burford, and the one involving Hilda Roche.

I'm glad they got Tony Alamo's wife's remains back and gave her a proper burial. That is beyond bizarre to me that he was so obsessed with his wife that he had to take her CORPSE with him. Of what value could that possibly have been to him? It's just plain weird.

Tony Alamo was definitely mentally unbalanced to steal a corpse. Another thing I remember about the segment was they interviewed one of the former followers of his and he said Tony had them pray constantly for his wife's "resurrection" and Tony was convinced she would be raised from the dead.

You were correct. Annette's body was found fully clothed, but her shirt was inside-out and one of her socks was found inside her coat pocket. Instead, she had put the orange sock on. It looked as though she had undressed (or was most likely forced to undress) and had to dress again in a hurry. Just like the UM segment showed, she was most likely sexually assaulted in the van and then was told to get dressed and while she was getting dressed, she put one sock on and couldn't find the other sock (the one that was in her pocket) then saw the orange sock, put it on and put her boots on then tried to escape and that's when she was shot in the back.

With Bobbie, her autopsy showed no signs of sexual assualt but a pair of plastic hand cuffs was found around one of her wrists. She was most likely going to be raped but escaped before that could happen and that's when she too was shot in the back. True to her scrapy nature, she did not go down without a fight.

I read this same book and was pretty convinced Luther did it, but in the article posted by Kane it said DNA ruled him out....hmmmmm.

How on earth that happened, I'll never know. It would be just too much of a coincidence for Luther NOT to be the killer. I wonder if the police ever did DNA tests on something other than Bobby's mitten, like her backpack, the cord wrapped around her wrist or anything else.

Slighly off topic but I know we were discussing attractive women on "Unsolved Mysteries" and I always felt Annette Kay Schnee had beautiful eyes. Something not menioned in the article though is in annette's wallet was a picture of a very creepy looking man who has never been identified.

You know, I read stuff like that and it just further reinforces the notion many prosecutors and investigators would rather charge someone, put a checkmark beside the case, and stick them behind bars, instead of actually solving the case.

So my DNA question has been answered and Luther is out. I wonder if they have checked the DNA from the suspects that the psychics fingered yet.

That guy is really creepy looking! He seems to have something wrong with his right eye.

..as for this case I believe maybe the killer was from another country and was just on vacation. And would probably never be caught.
