OMG, yea, I watched it last night and that was the only thing I could think of-- how much it resembled 8SR. I thought it was a really crappy knock-off(no offense to people who like it...I just don't).

Critics trash as 'Married With Children' wannabe

Having long performed well Sundays among adults 18-49 until ABC stole away the night with last season's "Desperate Housewives," Fox has come back this season with a show that’s exactly the kind of thing the network would have aired some 20 years ago, with great success.
That may be the problem.
“The War at Home,” which debuted last night at 8:30 p.m., sandwiched between Fox cartoon hits “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy,” is a brash, politically incorrect comedy about a mom, a dad, their three kids and all the boob jokes dad can spit up.
On the face of it, "War at Home” seems a lot like “Married With Children,” the Fox hit of the '80s, its first hit, in fact, and a show that may well have redefined the notion of edginess for many, knocking it a few notches down. "Married" was the anti-family sitcom.
But based on the initial reaction to “Home,” Fox doesn't appear to have another "Married;" far from it. Critics are trashing it as a wannabe "Married" but entirely lacking in that longtime hit's real appeal. It's as though Fox, in its urgency to strengthen its Sunday lineup, has forgotten the lesson learned from its more sophisticated shows that followed "Married," like “The Simpsons,” “Arrested Development” and “Bernie Mac.”
Too, Fox seems to have lost sight of why “Married” worked, critics suggest. It wasn’t simply the outrageous jokes, which now seem rather quaint in this post-“Sex and the City” era. “Married” worked because of its excellent lead actors, Ed O’Neill and Katey Sagal, and deft writing. The wit was raw, for sure, and sex hung heavy in the air, but it was the dynamics of the characters, not so much what they said, that made the series so entertaining. They were endearing.
“War” is not endearing. Michael Rapaport, playing the Al Bundy-like dad, is racist and homophobic. But he’s not charming, as Al Bundy was charming, or believable, as Archie Bunker was believable. His rants are more annoying than offensive. They are not funny.
“Yes, it's ‘Married With Children’ all over again, except that it's not played as broadly, or as successfully,” writes The New York Daily News’ David Bianculli.
“It's a pile of willfully outrageous jokes trying to cover up a complete dearth of wit, warmth, and character,” writes Boston Globe critic Matthew Gilbert. “It's a grating half-hour of attention-getting bluster that has been stuck between ‘Family Guy’ fanatics and their favorite show.”
The raunch factor is indeed there. In Sunday’s debut, Rapaport makes cracks about his wife's boobs and says he’d rather drink his own urine than allow his daughter to date a black guy.
Fox seems to be hoping “War” can become a Sunday night staple amid its cartoon lineup of henpecked husbands who speak their clueless minds, often to hysterical results. After all, Sunday is where “Married” became a hit.
But with this comedy, Fox is way off the mark. It certainly won’t entice viewers of ABC’s feel-good “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” to switch channels, and it may even send “Simpsons” fans fleeing to NBC’s competing “The West Wing” in search of intelligent dialogue.
As of this weekend, critics were already betting that “War” would be one of the season’s first casualties, though it should get decent sampling the first two or three weeks with NFL football and “The Simpsons” as lead-ins.
“Understand, Fox has a habit of always trying to return to the show that put it on the map almost 20 years ago – 'Married With Children,' to be specific,” writes The Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s Melanie McFarland. “But that was then, and this is awful.”

well at least they did it at a good time. since they dont have to battle with viewers watching 8SR anymore. not that im saying what TWAH is a good show. im just saying if they were going to start making ther series, this would be a chance of a life time.

The "one simple rule" line wasn't meant to show a lack of originality, it was a spoof on 8SR.

Aside from the fact it's a family sitcom, I can't imagine how anyone could suggest these two shows are even remotely alike. Could anyone really imagine John Ritter playing the racist/homophobic figure? Not to say that the character on WAH was bad--I liked the show and thought the dad was a really good character and the best sitcom dad I've seen since Al Bundy, but that's a knee-jerk response so that'll likely change after episode two.

The pattern of copying shows really shouldn't suprise anyone at all.

it goes in patterns as far as what sit coms come out and what action shows
and police dramas come out.

Someone gets a hit (8SR) and there is going to be ones that just tweak
the idea and then hope for another hit.

It's just standard practice for producers and writers.

I think every Family show on Fox is allot like Married with Children, its just there way.
