Default Michael and "ONE NATION UNDER GOD"

Did you hear the woman in the audience say: "RIGHT!" After Michael said "Mama, if there is a God, why are we still in the ghetto?"

I hate that audience member's reaction. 'Right' ????? God doesn't dictate where you live. The choices you make in life decide where you go. That really irritates me that the writers put that line in there. And it was made worse by that female audience member's shout.

I think that a lot of the time it's canned laughter and audience interaction. Just because it's taped in front of a live audience doesn't mean that they can't go back and add laughter and Right on's where they want them.

For instance I watch reruns of Martin and Living Single and you always hear this one lady in the "audience" shouting "You go girl." So I have a feeling that they add a lot of audience noise, especially if the joke isn't funny and they want it to sound funny.

I hope that makes sense.

It does. Still, I'd hate to think that whoever was responsible for interjecting those "laugh tracks" and other exclamations, was smart enough to not put that shout, at that moment. Totally out of place. I didn't like it.

On I love lucy, I hear the same lady laughing in the audience. It's a particular laugh so it's pretty distinguishable. Also, there is this constant "oh oh" that can be heard on many episodes.

Very annoying.

I agree 100% with you Irene. That stuff really irks me. God doesn't punish people by sending them to the ghetto.

Yep, true. He is a loving God and wouldn't punish people. Michael should have been happy he had a good home;considering they lost their father, life could have become a lot worse. With all the bad things they have had happen in their lives, they need to acknowledge the good.

Uh Oh Irene, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one. I was with Michael and the lady that said "Right". The Evans didn't do nothing but what was right, treated people fair and had respect for everybody that they interacted with, and they were still living in the ghetto. Like Cleatus said, "What you gotta do to make it if your poor these days." So it wasn't their choices that was keeping them in the ghetto, it was a higher power. Like Flo said, "There are two roads out of the ghetto, a right road and a wrong road, and so far we've manage to stay on the right road."

JJ- "And that's what's taking us so long to get out of here."

Oh yeah, another quote from Flo, "Jesus was sent to us to teach us humilty when things are going good, and faith to carry on when things are bad. Get this strait Jesus has nothing to do with luck."

My point is you can make all the choices you want, but if GOD don't want that for you, it ain't gonna happen.

I am sincerely not wanting to get political or anything but that line by Michael makes my skin crawl and it is a bad social message at the time. Or even today.

It almost teaches people there is no way to be successful unless you wish for it. Like God should keep us out of the ghetto. Yet let his son who the family worshipped stay nailed to a cross. Yeah. Jesus got the red carpet treatment from god.

I am no huge christian but from what I understand the concept of God is not to keep people lavishly living in a midtown apartment with round the clock hookers at your disposal.

Maybe I am wrong but I think the message was terrible.

It was a wrong message to send on a sitcom. God doesn't have anything to do with people living in the ghetto. It isn't punishment. Florida stayed the right course and in the very end was rewarded. Even if she didn't get out of the ghetto, she still lived a good christian life and will be rewarded in heaven.

I know Florida felt like dying after hearing Michael use those words concerning God.

Much like Fred said about Esther. "Telling Esther there's no God is like telling Jimmy Carter there's no more toothpaste".

Ah George, Bravo, Bravo...you said that well. Jesus was crucified, THE SON OF GOD. So, who is Michael or anyone real for that matter deserving of living the high life???? Jesus lived a very very very simple life. He didn't live in a castle, he didn't have the finest of clothes, he didn't have BLING hanging all over him. Just because you may not get what you think you deserve in life, here on earth, if you live the life that God has asked for (if this is your belief; it certainly is mine) then your rewards will be in Heaven. Paradise. Let's not get preachy here, but I agree with you and Brian that line didn't belong in that show, that episode, or anywhere else since it was being seen by a large audience. Yes, Michael in the end learned the lesson his mother was trying to convey, but for someone to have believed before, sure didn't take much to make him a NON believer and that is a DEFINITE WRONG MESSAGE. Michael didn't think bad when their dad died, he didn't think God didn't exist when JJ was shot, etc. So a little conversation from a lonely, cranky old man was enough to make him change his mind? WRONG!!!!

I like it when you suggest Jesus didn't run around with "bling bling" all over him.

You know, I am gonna go off topic a bit. The reason I put that there is because it irritates the hell outta me when I see alot of "famous" people walking around with all this damn gold jewelry and they "thank God" for the lifestyle they live, they thank God for their awards, etc. HOW STUPID IS THAT??? Jesus nor God is blessing you with that jewelry. Jesus didn't wear it.
