Default It's "formerly," not "formally."

I apologize in advance. I know it's not polite to correct people's spelling and/or grammar on message boards, but this has been driving me absolutely crazy for no particularly good reason.

I've seen people include their old screen name(s) in their signatures, preceded by the word "formally." This would be fine if it was meant to signify what your formal name(s) is/are. ("Mr. Nelson, an artist formally known as Prince, is a great musician")

But unless I'm making wild assumptions, you actually want to let members know what your retired screen names were. In this case, the word you want is "formerly." (I was formerly known as Jennifer. Then I had this miraculous operation.")

Thank you.

Wanna know what annoys me: The fact that there are at least 10,000 deaths in Louisiana and people are hungry, thirsty, etc. / Spelling, grammatical errors?
Anyway...

Excuse me - are you insinuating that I don't care about the people in the Gulf Coast? Because if so, you're wrong. Very, very wrong.

I've spent time and energy helping to organize a benefit for Hurricane Katrina victims at work. I've donated nearly $200 of my own money. I've encouraged people to donate money. I've encouraged people to donate blood (I'd donate my own, but the Red Cross won't accept my diseased, heavily medicated blood). I've thought endlessly about these people, sad and distraught that there isn't more I can do for them. I've shed tears.

So please, don't tell me that because there is a horrible tragedy going on right now that I'm not allowed to talk about something else once in awhile.

No, no apology is necessary. You are right abt your thread, that's what these forums are all abt. I apologize for coming out the way I did. Sorry it made you think something. No hard feelings.

I would like to formally announce that, although I formerly misused the two words, I've since learned the correct way.

Let me jump in with one of my own. Again, not to piss anyone off, but...there is no such word as ANYWAYS. It has no s on the end. No offense, but it pisses me off when people say that.

Amen to that. Call me a snob, but I have a ton of grammatical pet peeves.

I completely agree.... I am the same way.... I've heard people say it with an "s." Same with the word "mine." I've heard people say something like, "It's mines" OR "mine's is." There is NO need to use the contraction form; otherwise it will be redundant. Example: Mine is is.... (sic)...
