James really had some nerve in saying You have to bring home the whole loaf

I feel that the way James said that statement reflects that he himself needs to do the same thing. In his own sarcastic way, he was telling JJ "Look, you need to bring home the whole loaf, not like me, bringing home just a few slices, and it would be worse with you just bringing home crumbs." I think we need to remember that it's crumbs to us what James brought home, but try and remember that their situation was "awesome" compared to others around them. Remember the girls that attempted to rob them of the $2500? They were very very poor. Cousin Edgar, the rich cousin, he had alot more to lose than the Evans', he was "wealthy" in their eyes, but his downfall would be worse because he had more to lose; the bully who stole Michael's lunch $$$ said they had a nice crib, way better than his family. If you want to call his family "family" according to him, his mother stayed out days/nights at a time. So with just those comparisons, the Evans' had it good in the ghetto. They had their own bathroom, didn't have to share it with other families. They use to live like that when JJ was born. so in essence, James in his eyes, felt he brought home more than crumbs, but not the whole loaf like he wish he could have. AND HE WOULD HAVE HAD THE WHOLE LOAF AND THEM SOME HAD HE TAKEN THAT DAMN ALASKAN JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

James worked his ass off to provide for his family, I think he did the best that he could. And at the time JJ was working at the chicken shack and I know he wasn't making that much money for him and Diana to move out on their own. James was working 3 or 4 jobs just to make it.

And plus James was angry at the time and you know that when your angry you say stupid stuff.

True, there are diff. forms of anger. Anger stems from frustration and hurt. James was frustrated with his son saying and doing dumb things.

I hope my post made sense in regards to the thread. It's just my opinion, but I do think James did one hell of a job in that family. He didn't run-off like Mad Dog's daddy. Shoot, there I go bringing in episodes again!!!!
