And that-"the whole family has to try and fill his shoes" Now we all know the Evans Family was struggling when james was there so what shoes was there to fill? The Evans received a eviction notice in "J.J's New Career" and J.J storms all the house all mad and ******** and Thelma goes chasing after him. Correct me If I'm wrong but didn;t the evans recieve a Eviction notice when James lived with them?-lol

I think Thelma was trying to say that since James was gone, EVERYBODY had to chip in to keep the family together.

James worked really hard to put food on the table and clothes on his kids back. Not only that, but he was the backbone of the family. When James spoke, people listened.

But financially, he was doing that much, but yes he was still hard working. Thelma made it seem like they had no money problems when james was alive |

BTW, if JJ weren't so dumb and eager to play 'Santa Claus', he could've been slick and not get Florida suspicious. At least, not right away. He could've gotten away with it for awhile longer, but his mistake was not thinking!!!! As for the filling of James' shoes, I believe what was being conveyed is that it takes almost the whole family to try and do what James' did all by himself. They may not have been rich, or even financially secure, but they were not on the streets, they did have food, clean clothes. That's alot better than those folks who appeared on that Alderman Davis episode: four people sharing one room, sharing one bathroom down the hall with 6 other families, etc. compare that with the Evans' and I would take the Evans' situation any day. Sometimes it goes back to that saying "There's always somebody worse off than you". |

Oh sh*t Solomon - you are so funny. I had to read that twice myself and was scratching my head wondering why they'd have high-def plasma in 1976 and I was watching some crappy tube jobby that had 12 channels of just "snow"!!! I think Thelma meant that JJ was trying too much in too many ways to be the father figure for the family. I know from first hand experience since my eldest brother did the same thing after my dad died. At least Thelma was nicer about it....my brother got a glass of wine thrown in his face for his attempt!!

I see it like this here, Like JJ said in "The Big Move pt. 2" That he was scared of suddenly becoming the man of the house. So all of a sudden you feel like you got a family to take care of when you never had any experience in doing that. So it was like all the pressure was on him all of a sudden, and if he didn't come through he would feel like a failure of taking care of his family. At least James had about 20 years of trying to take care of a family, so he kinda knew how to keep his family above water for the most part. |
