Default Using the Internet at work

I was just informed by my new supervisor if anyone is caught on the web they will be fired. Here is my question, why give me access?-lol She said if you use it during your lunch break that's fine, This sounds so DUMB. I feel if you are going to try and be sneaky about catching me on the web, then why do I have access? i know it's for work related things but they have to know that after someone finishes uses it for work related issues they will surf a little. I'm telling them to take the web off my computer.

One more question, I was told they have SPYWARE to see if someone was on the web. Can someone tell me a little more about spyware?-lol

they could be using SurfWatch.. which is a monitoring program that can tell you in "real time" what every user online is viewing, etc. etc. It's not "spyware" though.

and I agree, that is pretty dumb. I can see if it's cutting into production, or porn is coming up, but just for your every day run of the mill "surfing"... yea, i agree, dumb.

that's how the computers at my school are now. for the past two years i've been getting away with going to restricted sites (message boards, etc) excellently but this year i had to sign an agreement that all the web pages i go to will be viewed by the school district or else i won't have access to my account. eh, whatever, i still browse this site a little but i stay away from certain threads and don't log in.

I'm lucky...that's all I do at work is surf the net. As long as I answer the phone when it rings, they don't seem to care what I do. Though I did end up with aurora from some stupid popup I got from a website where you take all those dumb little tests and quizzes.

At school they won't even let us use Image Searches. It blows.

My current job is the same way - you're only allowed to browse the web if it's work-related. Honestly, I kind of like it better that way. At my previous job, we were allowed to browse the web, but it was quite distracting to multi-task (do my job and post on SO and other board at the same time). This way, I'm more efficient with my job and there's less distractions.

Same with me. I'm on SO all day from work, moreso than when I'm home. I work in an office by myself, and plus my supervisor is based in a completely different part of the city. If I physically see him 4 times a year, that's a lot. I'm used to being online at work.

Working in a multi-computer classroom environment, there are sooooo many computers around me in all our computer classrooms. It's easy to break for a few minutes to just "check" my email and threads/posts in forums.

My old job that I had when living in Tampa, I used to surf the web. I'd be online and live chat for Nick's revenge of the 80's and still got my work done, however, it was somewhat distracting as well.

That's nothing I worked at a place where they not only monitored your web activity they would go through your e-mail. The section I worked in one day the supervisor had the computer guys go through all the computers and printed every e-mail that everyone had in their system, and she found out how we all felt about her.

I agree with Solomon, I hate the fact that they install it on your computer, but they forbid you to use it. And the fact that the owners say it is their equipment and they can tell you how to use it.

I kind of agree to the extent that employers might be worried that the Internet might serve as a distraction to the work. I assume they intend it to be used for something to do with the job, or maybe they just install it so people can have a look during breaks or have a quick glance at emails if they have the time.

However, if people are able to do their job well and use the Internet at the same time, then I guess there's no harm in them using it, as long as they don't let it get completely in the way of their work. Also, if you've managed to complete what you have to complete and there's nothing more to do, and nobody else can find anything for you, I don't think there's any harm in using it.
