During the get-together with Jim Darling and the gang at Rob's house, Rob mentions how he can't get along without Walter...Walter who comes in once a month to do the woodwork. So who cleans their woodwork once a month anyway? And is it such a big job that one needs to hire a man to do it? Was that whole Walter and the woodwork thing as stupid as I think it is? For years that Walter bit has bugged me.

Good points. And how much woodwork was there in a newly constructed, 1960's, suburban, ranch-style house? And why haven't we seen or heard of Walter before?

I didn't know if this was a part of early 60s upper-middle-class housekeeping that I didn't know about.

I've noticed that, too. And Jerry says Walter does their windows. I've also wondered how common it was to have one's groceries delivered by the "grocery boy." I know they do that in "I Love Lucy," also. Was that a common practice in the 50's and early 60's? I know it wasn't at MY house!

You know, a friend of mine has her milk delivered to her family everyday, so maybe it still goes on in some areas.

Lolac, it seems like just about every old family show had a boy deliver the groceries, didn't it? I wonder if it was common back then because alot of women had no way of getting out to shop themselves? One car in the family, and Pops had to use it to go to work? And I imagine the stores that had delivery service must've charged more than stores that didn't. A long time ago I worked with a lady who was a young mother in the 50s and she told me that she would get the car one day during the work week so she could get all her errands done.

And Walter doing the Helpers' windows makes sense. At least Jerry didn't say the windows get done monthly.

But getting the woodwork done each month just sounds crazy to me.

I can remember my grandparents getting milk delivered till probably the early to mid 70s. And besides having a milkman, my hubby's family also had an eggman come to the house.
