Emoticons vs. Smileys? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Okay, a friend and I were debating on this. Emoticons are the alpha-numeric characters that look like facial expressions (such as ;-) ), AND smileys are the actual php face-looking images like this ---->

. He calls the

image as an emoticon, but I told him it wasn't and is a smiley. Haha... Who's right and who's wrong?

according to Wikipedia,
