Default Something that I think was inconsistent involving Keith and James

James worked at a car wash and yet was able to afford (although barely) an apartment in the projects.

Keith was a cab driver and couldn't afford his own place.

I would think that cab drivers get paid a little bit more than washing cars. Why couldn't Keith and Thelma get their own place?

probably because he made too much $$$ to qualify for the projects and too little to begin paying rent + first and last months rent + security deposit = staying with Thelma in the projects

You have to remember that James worked like 2 or 3 Jobs a week just to make it sometimes. He worked all night one night and made only 5 dollars. James was an hardworking man.

Did they ever try to explain this? Because it made both Keith and Thelma look like moochers!

well you know sitcoms, we have to assume alot of things. I guess their feeling is that Keith didn't make enough just by the fact that they lived in her family's house.

I doubt he made too much to qualify for the project, I don't think there's any qualifications for the projects as long as you have you rent at the first of the month. If anything he made too little to pay the rent.

That always bothered me too. To qualify for the NFL, you must go to college.

Dumb athletes always get scholarships to go to college.

THe college wants a name with its sports program so they give these gifted athletes who are stupid acedemic wise scholarships.

Was it ever mentioned that he even graduates?.

I don't remember watching a lot of the Keith episodes. I must check them out when they come on TV land.

OMG...another post regarding the same thing I mentioned and posted before...I had said Keith was a good example of why you need an education. REMEMBER EVERYONE!!!??????? Anyhow, I said that Keith should have dug deeper into the books just in case he needs something to fall back on because football is a sport (just like alot of sports) where one can be injured to the point of not playing anymore. Had Keith received an education (such as a degree in something) he could have that to fall back on. He could have received a degree in something that would allow him a better chance at getting a decent job rather than drive cabs. He wouldn't be making the millions like he would in football, but at least he has a chance at making a decent living.
As for the rent in the projects, there are (at least here) where one must qualify to live in the projects. Have a limited income, you pay a part of your rent and then Section 8 pays the rest of your rent; be disabled; etc. So when I said Keith and Thelma made too much, that's assuming their projects had similar qualifications. They didn't have kids. And yet, it brings up the subject of Willona. She is by herself and you assume that she makes $$$, but not enough to have an apt. elsewhere. She qualifies as a single person with an income that falls under their income qualificiations.

I don't think you have to have graduated from College in order to play in the NFL. A lot of player get recruited right out of college, that's why you see a lot of NFL players going back to college to finish their education. It's just like how a lot of NBA players are recruited right out of High School.

And just because you have a degree doesn't mean that you'll get a great job, a lot of college graduates struggle to get jobs. I myself had to struggle to get a great paying job. It takes time sometimes.

I remember in Getting up the Rent , the very first episode when Willona said something about going to the Welfare Office and James said No that he didn't want to get handouts from nobody. And when Florida went behind James back the Welfare said that they couldn't get help because James made too much that yr.

You don't have to graduate college to play in the NFL, but you do have to go to college. The NFL will not recruit kids right out of high school.

I didn't say a great job...I said a "decent job". and you are right abt graduating and the NFL drafting people outta college and so forth. but the point of my original thread about needing an education is that it points right back to what the character James said all along. You need an education so you don't end up with hands like these. He said this to Michael when he though an education wasn't important. You have a CHANCE at getting a decent job with a degree than without one. I know abt graduating college and getting a career. But I didn't mention anything abt Keith making BUCKS or anything, I said he could have had a decent job. You don't need a college education to drive a cab. You just need to have a drivers' license, a good driving record, know your way around the city, county, etc. Keith is a good example of why a good education is a great cushion to fall back on. I myself have computer skills, billing representative skills and other things I am trained in. It's a good thing too cuz when I hurt my back and couldn't return to work, I could still work out of my home and do legal stuff here on my computer, just don't have an a**hole boss to work for. I am my own boss.
