I checked out for myself and found if you type in your search engine: MS Script Control Unknown Error, you will find many links to possible answers. I wish I could tell you exactly what you need to do, but you need to check various things. When I have received an error message I always type whatever message i receive in my aol search engine and i get lots of links that help me out. Sorry, wish i could assist you better.

There are MANY things that could be causing this, more information would be helpful, but lets try anyways,

first though, does this error come up as soon as you get to the desktop when you startup, or does it happen when you are doing somethiing?
  1. as soon as you see the error message again hit the Control-Alt-Delete keys to open the Close Program / Task Manager window - make me a list of ALL the items listed in there
  2. disable your System Restore (looks like you are using Windows Me)
    1. Open the System Properties window, either by right-clicking on My Computer and clicking on Properties, or by clicking on the System icon in the Control Panel
    2. Click the Performance tab, and then click File System.
    3. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore.
    4. Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.
    5. After the problem has been fixed dont forget to RE-ENABLE System Restore by reversing these directions.
  3. run full scans with Spybot Seek & Destroy and AdAware
  4. run the latest version of CoolWebShredder
  5. clean out all of your temporary files with CCleaner
  6. run an online virus scan such as Housecall Online
  7. try to uninstall any unwanted programs in the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel (you can post a list of any programs you dont recognize and we can try to identify them)
  8. disable any malware that appears in the System Configuration Utility on the Startup tab
    1. Click on the Start button
    2. Click Run
    3. Type msconfig in the Open box and click OK.
    4. The System Configuration Utility window should appear.
    5. Click the Startup tab.
    6. Make a list of ALL the programs listed there (or just press the PrintScreen key on the keyboard to get a screen capture, and paste it into MS Paint and save then upload the file here
    7. As soon as we identify any unnecessary or bad programs, we can unheck them to prevent from starting when we boot up the computer (If you later find that you need one of these programs back, you can always re-check the program to get it back)

there may be a simple answer to this, try this first:
  1. as soon as you see the error message again hit the Control-Alt-Delete keys to open the Close Program / Task Manager window - make me a list of ALL the items listed in there - if you see a process named RTCRTP.exe, right click on it and click End Task to close it - if it IS there follow the next steps
  2. disable any malware that appears in the System Configuration Utility on the Startup tab
    1. Click on the Start button
    2. Click Run
    3. Type msconfig in the Open box and click OK.
    4. The System Configuration Utility window should appear.
    5. Click the Startup tab.
    6. uncheck RTCRTP
    7. close the System Configuration Utility
  3. do a search for RTCRTP with the Find>Files and Folders on the Start Menu - you might need to make hidden files visible:
    1. Double-click My Computer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. Click to clear the Hide protected operating system files check box.
    5. When you are prompted to confirm your choice, click Yes.

NOTE: Because protected operating system files have both the System and Hidden attributes, the Show hidden files and folders option must be selected to view these files and folders.
    6. Click OK.

could you download the latest version of HijackThis! and post a log for me?

of those two files, one is part of MSN or Outlook, and the other is security-related; it could be a missing or corrupted file - or it could be something nasty in there

i would try to see if we can find anything suspicious in there and remove it, then if nothing shows up you could try to replace that file or reinstall Internet Explorer...

well, congrats on having a clean system Angela - i dont see anything in there that looks wrong,

...as for that popup - that MSNAPPAU.exe file is the Automatic Updating service that is installed with the MSN Toolbar, and for some reason it can't connect whenever it tries to update - this could be due to a corrupt or missing file or a problem with the MSN Toolbar

I would honestly suggest you either uninstall the MSN Toolbar or disable the updater service - and because it is a MS service, you can't simply disable it in MSCONFIG or other similar means, you have to completely remove the service.

Your best bet would be to stop the service (press CTRL-ALT-DEL and click on the Processes tab, then right-click on the MSNAPPAU.exe process and click on End Process) then search for it with the Find Files or Folders on the Start menu (make sure you can see hidden and system files), then RENAME the MSNAPPAU.exe file so that it can't start.

If you MUST have the MSN toolbar, I would suggest you uninstall it, then go to the Windows update site and do any necessary updates, esp anything related to Internet Explorer, then reinstall the MSN Toolbar.

I had forgotten I had MSN Toolbar, I just uninstalled it, so hopefully that does the trick.

I don't have a processes tab when I do CTRL-ALT-DEL

Thanks for all the help Roby
