Remember the days before Phil Collins became lame? No? Well, he was cool once, I swear! I mean, come on - let's forget about that Tarzan crap for a second; this is the guy who sang "Mama" and "Land Of Confusion!"
The Platinum Collection, a three-disc, career-spanning Genesis compilation, which saw release in the UK in November of 2004, will finally be given a North American release via Rhino on September 13 (after having been delayed six months due to U.S. rights issues over songs from the first album). The set is in (mostly) reverse-chronological order, beginning with four tracks from 1991's We Can't Dance (the band's swan song with Collins) and concluding with "The Knife" from 1970's Trespass. The album even includes one song featuring lead vocalist Ray Wilson (the Gary Cherone of Genesis), in the form of "Calling All Stations," from the 1997 album of the same name. The only downside to the set is that there are only nine tracks featuring original lead singer Peter Gabriel. Those are all on disc three. Most of the pre-Invisible Touch tracks have been given new stereo mixes by engineer Nick Davis. The tracklist: Disc One: (1983-1997) 1. No Son Of Mine 2. I Can't Dance 3. Jesus He Knows Me 4. Hold On My Heart 5. Invisible Touch 6. Throwing It All Away 7. Tonight, Tonight, Tonight [edit] 8. Land Of Confusion 9. In Too Deep 10. Mama 11. That's All 12. Home By The Sea 13. Second Home By The Sea 14. Illegal Alien [2004 remix] 15. Paperlate [2004 remix] 16. Calling All Stations Disc Two: (1976-1981) 1. Abacab [2004 remix] 2. Keep It Dark [2004 remix] 3. Turn It On Again [2004 remix] 4. Behind The Lines 5. Duchess 6. Misunderstanding [2004 remix] 7. Many Too Many [2004 remix] 8. Follow You, Follow Me [2004 remix] 9. Undertow [2004 remix] 10. In That Quiet Earth [2004 remix] 11. Afterglow [2004 remix] 12. Your Own Special Way 13. A Trick Of The Tail [2004 remix] 14. Ripples [2004 remix] 15. Los Endos [2004 remix] Disc Three: (1970-1974) 1. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway [2004 remix] 2. Counting Out Time [2004 remix] 3. The Carpet Crawlers [2004 remix] 4. Firth Of Fifth [2004 remix] 5. Cinema Show [2004 remix] 6. I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) [2004 remix] 7. Supper's Ready 8. The Musical Box [2004 remix] 9. The Knife [2004 remix] A DVD, The Video Show, will be released the same day. It will feature 32 Genesis videos, all remixed in 5.1, including a 1999 remake of "The Carpet Crawlers" featuring both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins on lead vocals. 1. No Son Of Mine 2. I Can't Dance 3. Hold On My Heart 4. Jesus He Knows Me 5. Tell Me Why 6. Invisible Touch 7. Throwing It All Away 8. Land Of Confusion 9. Tonight, Tonight, Tonight 10. Anything She Does 11. In Too Deep 12. That's All 13. Mama 14. Illegal Alien 15. Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea 16. Paperlate 17. Abacab 18. Keep It Dark 19. No Reply At All 20. Man On The Corner 21. Turn It On Again 22. Duchess 23. Misunderstanding 24. Follow You, Follow Me 25. Many Too Many 26. A Trick Of The Tail 27. Ripples 28. Robbery, Assault And Battery 29. Congo 30. Shipwrecked 31. Not About Us 32. The Carpet Crawlers 1999 |

pretty smart thinking with the discs. Disc 1 will be for the housewife Phil fans, Disc 2 will be for the fans that remember when Phil was a rocker and Disc 3 will be for the Gabriel fans.

Hey AKA thanks for the post!
And yes I remember when Phil was cool before Disney got control of his mind. I saw his But Seriously Tour and he was so great.

), and I don't have any of their albums, except The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and Genesis (1983). So maybe this will be a good starting point for me.I've been looking forward to this release for almost a year and am glad that, after all the delays, it looks like it will finally see the light of day. That's a good thing, because I was about to pay big bucks to get an import copy from England. |

This sounds like a cool collection. I have every Genesis album (except for the 1997 one), but I might just get this collection to have the remixs of the classic Gabriel songs.
John, you are way too hard on Phil Collins. And I always thought I bashed Billy Joel too often. Phil recorded some really good songs during the 1980's like "In the Air Tonight", "Easy Lover", "Against All Odds", "Two Hearts", "I Wish it Would Rain Down", "Seperate Lives" and "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven". Oddly enough, his biggest selling album, No Jacket Required, featured his worst pre-Tarzan music like "One More Night", "Sussudio" and "Take Me Home" (truly awful songs).

I've heard mixed reviews about the import version - which has the same tracklisting and remixes. Apparently, some fans don't like the remixes.
I've always thought they should do a single-disc "Best Of" of the Gabriel years. Turn It On Again: The Hits is mainly drawn from the Phil Collins era, so there's never been a best of anthology solely focused on the band's progressive era. |

It is a good looking set.
It's easy to forget how many great songs Genesis had over all those years. |

And, after all the Phill Collins-bashing, I do want to state that I think his first solo album is a masterpiece. |

The set looks good, but I would like it better if they had included "No Reply at All" and "Just a Job to Do", two of my favorite Genesis songs. Both of those tracks still get a good bit of radio airplay, so it baffles me why they were left off this collection.

I just got the set, and I really like it. I was afraid I was going to dislike the new mixes of the songs, which were panned heavily at another board I frequent. But they turned out really good and accentuated the individual tracks.
I didn't like the reverse chronological order. I realize why they ordered the tracks that way (more people prefer the Phil Collins-helmed era, and would be unlikely to listen to discs that started with Peter Gabriel stuff). I went ahead and put the tracks in chronological order, and I think they work better this way: Disc One: 1. The Knife 2. The Musical Box 3. Supper's Ready 4. Firth Of Fifth 5. The Cinema Show 6. I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) 7. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 8. Counting Out Time 9. Carpet Crawlers Disc Two: 1. A Trick Of The Tail 2. Ripples 3. Los Endos 4. In That Quiet Earth 5. Afterglow 6. Your Own Special Way 7. Many Too Many 8. Follow You Follow Me 9. Undertow 10. Turn It On Again 11. Behind The Lines 12. Duchess 13. Misunderstanding 14. Abacab 15. Keep It Dark Disc Three: 1. Paperlate 2. Mama 3. That's All 4. Home By The Sea 5. Second Home By The Sea 6. Illegal Alien 7. Invisible Touch 8. Throwing It All Away 9. Tonight Tonight Tonight 10. Land Of Confusion 11. In Too Deep 12. No Son Of Mine 13. I Can't Dance 14. Jesus He Knows Me 15. Hold On My Heart 16. Calling All Stations |
