James & Alderman Davis Episode - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Why is it that James was so adamant abt Davis being the one to vote for? I always got the impression from all previous episodes that he didn't trust politicians, black or white. I recall he told Michael that having more Black cops wouldn't make a difference, and he has said so many "negative" things abt politicians (most of which are true) so why would he stand by and defend a man who obviously doesn't have the public's interest at heart?

Alderman Davis "pulled some strings" to get the Evans family into the projects, so I guess James feels indebted to him.

I think that should've been mentioned when him and Flo were going at it. I could see James saying words to the effect of: "if it weren't for him, we'd still be living in a one room shack". Just doesn't make sense. If the writers would have thrown that in. It seems the writers didn't remain consistent with the James character and his negative feelings abt politics.

Well I don't think he was put in as evil a light as he would later be put in.

The young kid was wet behind the ears apparantly.

Maybe it was about James getting duped by a politician.

Who Knows? It is a pretty confusing episode.

yeah that it was. I guess the writers wanted this episode that they had to change James attitude around just for this episode.

Did you miss a part on that episode? James told Flo, "Remember we couldn't afford to have kids until I got a job, it was Alderman Davis who got me that temporary job at the stock yard. (looks at JJ) Then we had you."

He also said that "if it wasn't for Davis we never would have got into the projects." And Flo said," Well it's about time that somebody got us OUT of the projects.

i must have not been watching that part. I was on the computer at the same time (sighs) okay. good answer!!!!! i'll take it!!! So now my new question? Why didn't Alderman Davis help James when he graduated from trade school? I am sure with his connections he could have assisted James. LOL

Because the Trade School episode was during the Pre-Alderman Davis Era

yeah, that i know, but if Alderman Davis got the Evans' into housing there where they currently live, then why not help him get a better job.

Yeah that's a good point, but it looked like they had no intentions of bringing the Alderman Davis character back because he wasn't seen again until season 4. So to me it looked like if Amos never had got fired, we would have never seen Fred Davis again.

It just dawned on me last night after watching the Alderman Davis episode, I was thinking abt this post of yours Soloman. (Yes, I was thinking abt you)

Anyhow, you are saying in your post that Davis' character wasn't seen again until season 4. It makes sense to me now that they wouldn't bring him in sooner than that since they wouldn't use his character again until it was TIME FOR THE DAVIS CHARACTER to run for re-election. I don't know what the length of time an alderman has as his/her term of office, but it seems the writers worked it out to look like it was re-election time. Do I make sense????? LOL Also, did anyone notice the alderman's aide, the one who told Davis abt how JJ's comedic speech really worked in Davis' favor, is the same actor who appeared in the ROCKY movies? He was Apollo Creed's assistant trainer. In Rocky 3, he helps Rocky with his training when Apollo becomes Rocky's new trainer. In the movies, he is bald. In this episode he has what appears to be a very bad wig.

It was also strange that James death was not brought up to Fred Davis at all in that episode. Especially since they were buddies

I guess Norman Lear put his foot down on any mention of James', since James' name was a rarity, and when it was mentioned, it was very very brief. Sad.
