Default Silly things we believed as children

Tom and I were talking about this this morning and got a good laugh out of some of the stuff we used to believe when we were kids.

When I was very small, for some reason I had a deathly fear of the moon. If it was dark outside and I looked out the window and the moon was out I always thought that it was going to come down and get me. I remember being afraid to go in the bathroom by myself because I could see it through the window. My brothers would always tease me about that.

I used to think that the world used to be in black and white because of all the old B+W movies and my moms childhood pictures.

I also remember watching that show Eight is Enough and thinking that that was a real life family.

I also thought that you got pregnant by hugging and kissing.

What are some silly things you all used to believe in?

My parents were very down to earth and did not encourage superstitions so I am not superstitious at all. But I did believe in Santa Claus for a while. That ended at about age 4 I think. Right at the moment I cannot think of anything weird that I believed as a child.

I hope I don't offend anyone, just remember it's silly things we believed AS CHILDREN. I used to believe that if I didn't eat all the chinese food that was served to me when my dad would buy it from the local chinese restaurant, that a samuari (spelling?) would come around and flash his sword at me. I imagined this guy coming in the night with painted white face and his hair in that ponytail type style with the pants that go just to the knees. I think you all know what i am describing.
I also used to believe that monsters in Japan did exist. I watched Giant Robot too much I guess.

Ok! I just remembered something! One summer night when I was very small( back in the 50's) I was watching TV with my dad and I heard a loud buzzing sound outside of our screen door(back in those days we kept our doors open at night) Anyway, I thought that termites were eating our house! Sometime or other I had learned about termites and I was petrified! I never said anything to him about it but ,man, was I scared! He seemed unconcerned so I guess I just forgot about it. The buzzing sound was June Bugs (I realized that later) But I still remember how scared I was! Other than that I didn't get scared too easily.

Hey! I thought that too! But in sex education in the 8th grade (circa 1963)I learned that it was not true! My Mom who was from the 40's generation did not tell me anything! That can really be dangerous as she now realizes. But I still believe that it is the parent's place to educate their children in these matters. Not some stranger. My kids were told the truth by age 10(by their father and me). Back in my day it was never discussed!
Whew! I was so clueless!

I was 15 and I assumed all a man had to do to impregnate a woman was to insert his ****. I didn't know abt the "sperm" part. You know what I mean.

I believed that if you rubbed against something like a wall, you'd start a fire.

Haha...good thread!!

I KNOW I have a lot of "childhood beliefs," but I can't think of them all right now. I will try and post them as I recall them. I remember one, though....

I remember when I was in elementary school, my mom used to tell me that a baby "comes out" through surgical procedure across a women's stomach. Just like a C-section but in EVERY pregnancy that's how a baby was born!

I thought women could get preganat by being around kids
I thought that the moon was made of cheese
I thought that the tooth fairy was my grandma
I was scared of oreos
